I'm following a friend and I want to send him direct messages that only us will see. How do I request him to follow me ?

Inappropriate?You can only direct message someone who is following YOU. So if they are your friend, you need to ask them to follow you and then you can direct message them.
Or to emphasize, the only way to do this is via real life, email, phone, etc., you cannot use the twitter interface to get them to follow you.

Twitter needs to add a function where you can request people to follow you. It doesn't make sense to only have to go one way.
