RSS feeds down?
My twitter RSS feeds have been down since Friday. Is anyone else experiencing the same problem? Thx.

Inappropriate?I heard a rumor that RSS feeds are now password protected? True? False? Permanent, or just to help with performance issues? Also, the With Friends tab has disappeared from everyone's Twitter page.
I’m missing my RSS feed
-
I believe the "with friends" tab was removed for performance reasons. The equivalent 'with friends' functionality in the Twitter API was also removed, based on discussions in the Twitter Development Google Group -
yes you do need a password to access the RSS. Not sure what is happening. Google Reader won't let you access the feed since it is password protected. I too miss RSS for all the tweets I miss during the day. -
Inappropriate?Major problem. I read tweets via rss exclusively so I can distinguish read and unread tweets and use "mark as read". So no rss means no twitter for me. Please fix. :(
I’m not using twitter any more
-
This might be a workaround??

Inappropriate?Nope
-
Inappropriate? We've heard a couple people reporting this. Could you include links to the specific feeds?
-
Both my atom and rss links in the following dir:
http://twitter.com/statuses/friends_t... -
http://twitter.com/statuses/friends_t...
Specifically, visiting the link pops up a box asking for a username and password for "Twitter API" that when ignored takes you to a page reading "Could not authenticate you." I assume this is because the "with friends" tab is currently nonexistent. Other feeds seem to be working fine. -
Inappropriate?Ok. Thanks for clarifying which feeds you were looking at. That explains the situation.
Recently we made a change to remove the With Friends tab from user profiles. We did this after finding out that this tab was both a relatively rarely accessed as well as computationally expensive page for us to serve.
At the same time we removed access to the feeds for this page. It's still possible for users to receive their own With Friends timelines, but authentication is required. What we did not anticipate was that some users were subscribing to these feeds in readers. Most readers do not support authentication, so the feeds that these folks were subscribing have since broken.
It's our hope to bring back the access to these feeds at some point. But for stability reasons, we're unable to restore them at this time. We should have done a better job explaining this up front and anticipating this problem. Apologies for this; it's our highest priority to provide a reliable, stable service for everyone.
I'm cross-posting this to the status blog so that folks can find out about it more easily. -
Can these feeds not be generated very few hours? Most people expect some delay with RSS, and don't constantly watch them because of this. -
Well, my With Friends RSS feed is completely missing. :( http://twitter.com/statuses/friends_t... Even if I authenticate, there's a blank page or an error. -
Making a priority of bringing back these feeds would be much appreciated. My "with friends" feed was the sole way I followed my friends' tweets. Checking the site multiple times a day just isn't feasible (and I can't imagine it's a better use of the site's resources than the feeds, either). -
Inappropriate?Fwiw, there's a blogpost on Jon Udell's blog that lists quite a number of RSS readers that support authentication.
In the comments, you'll find RSS readers that people say support authentication. Among them (listed in no particular order):
- RSS Bandit
- Outlook 2007
- Feedreader
- FeedDemon
- Newsfox, a Firefox plugin
- LiveJournal
- RSSOwl
- Vienna
- Blogbridge
And finally, someone has released a service called Free My Feed which "frees your feed from authentication or invalid SSL certificates for use in the feed reader of your choice."
Note: I haven't tried most of the services above. But perhaps one of these will be useful as a work-around in the meantime. -
Inappropriate?wow. this is a real bummer. i hope you guys can work this out soon. i too use google reader almost exclusively for reading my tweets from friends, and really miss having my rss feed.
could you explain the rationale behind authenticating anyway? seems a bit excessive.
I’m trying to stay positive a bit longer.
-
Inappropriate?FreemyFeeds seems to be working well for me. I think Jason addressed the authentication issue on the status blog, it was to help cut down on the traffic. You can access all of your friends tweets via RSS by using the RSS link on the bottom left of the main page and putting it into Free my Feeds (www.freemyfeeds.com) That seems to have fixed the problem for now.
-
looks like an empty spam site to me. nothing about feeds there at all. -
Inappropriate?Twitter is dead to me. I RSS-subscribe to Facebook Updates. That's what everyone else who RSS'es will do too -- leave useless twitter in the dust.
-
Inappropriate?fwiw, Free My Feed is www.freemyfeed.com. the pluralization goes to the spam as @ClintJCL pointed out.
i set it up and it seems to work alright so far.
i get cutting down traffic, but isn't Twitter all about traffic? just saying.
I’m undecided
-
i take it back about freemyfeed.com. sucks. got an initial update, then nothing the rest of the day. blah. -
Inappropriate?Well that's just great - I used the RSS feed as part of my Masters for a Twitter application that I need to submit Sunday. It was working beautifully at a presentation last week and now I can't use it.
Whilst I can understand the wider Twitter issue, it just creates more work for me after months of no weekends, to try and get things working remotely and I have already spent dozens of hours on this. Will you reinstate the RSS feeds in the next days or is it going to be weeks?
I’m annoyed
-
Inappropriate?www.freemyfeeds.com - I love you and Twitter can sit in the corner with the big pointy hat... the one with D on the front :-( (not really, I love Twitter too much to be mad)
I’m better now
-
Inappropriate?Jason Goldman -
I also used the 'and friends' RSS feed almost exclusively. For updating, I use iPhone's Twinkle app (love the geolocation), but my friend tweets were all pulled down via RSS into Apple's Mail. It seems to support authentication (I'm prompted when I try to connect), but after the initial connection and first group of RSS'd tweets, it ceases to function. Getting it to work again (once) requires resubscribing to the feed.
While I appreciate the attempt to save server resources, it sounds like a number of people really enjoyed this feature. I'm going to guess that the page was being constantly updated for everywhere, and relatively few people used it, so it was nixed. How viable, if that's the case, would it be to generate the page only when it's requested? Or, make the user 'enable' it, first? Middle ground where you save overhead, and we get our friends' tweets in one central location.
I’m sad it's broken
-
Inappropriate?Have we all contacted Google Reader to ask them to support authentication? I'm going to now!
I’m inspired
-
Inappropriate?Bringing back the 'With Friends' feeds would be a really nice thing to do right now, I'm sick of having to go the site to check interesting replies to people I follow from others that I don't, I don't want to have to follow half the internet myself.
I’m a bit miffed
-
Inappropriate?IMarkus, I think you mean freemyfeed.com - the one you linked to (with an s) is a generic domain reservation page.
I’m indifferent
-
Inappropriate?I am surprised more people aren't complaining about how this affects those of us publishing Tweets on our web sites. Doesn't twitter want the traffic?
I’m disappointed
-
Inappropriate? We were using our feed from our twitter account to publish announcements on our website - and all was going great. But last week our feed started publishing updates from some other twitter account - so we had to pull the feed off our site. Now it seems that publishing our feed to our website isn't really possible. This is the only reason we signed up for Twitter in the first place.
I hope Twitter reconsiders the feed authentication change and goes back to the way things worked before.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? The lack of RSS feeds is very concerning. I've been using it to read tweets from the day I started using Twitter as well as to syndicate my tweets to my blog. It needs to return soon, please!
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? For those of you still looking for an alternative, if you use Firefox, check out the TwitterFox addon (at addons.mozilla.com). It's solved my problems.
I’m still not able to show tweets on my site tho
1 person says
this solves the problem
-
Inappropriate?I can only afford to check twitter a couple of times a day, and I don't have a computer on all the time to receive the tweets, so I was using gregrarious, a server based RSS reader, consume the RSS feed and save my friends tweets during the day, but it stopped working recently, I guess cause of this change.
I tried the authenticated url http://username:password@twitter.com/statuses/friends_timeline/52533.rss
but that isn't working either. Anyone have suggestions? Not being able to use the RSS feed totally reduces the value of twitter to me.
I’m very unhappy
-
Inappropriate? We cannot wait so much in Iran, hurry up google.
Twitter , Facebook, FF, all are filtered, but Greader.
WE NEED it immediately..
I’m anxious
-
This will not change. Please read the comments:
RSS feeds are not down, they are password protected. You can still use them in an rss reader with www.freemyfeed.com -
