Hey guys,
We've eradicated most of the spam associated with this particular batch. There may be some stragglers, but the majority of it is wiped out. If you fine any spammers that managed to elude us, you can:
1. visit http://twitter.com/spam
2. follow us
3. send us a direct message with the spammer name, like this:
d spam @joycelynmz
and we'll take care of it.
Thanks!
Crystal

Inappropriate?I've had two already this morning:
olivazyrke
vickier9wu
Just keep blocking them; I think that gives Twitter a clue. -
Inappropriate?I've had the following so far:
cordiaoicj
jung6hsd9y
selinalyts
purtellheats
Seems like accounts are created by a bot. -
Inappropriate?atleast three already this morning - have blocked them all

Inappropriate?Same problem - three this morning:
http://twitter.com/mirthaaxvw
http://twitter.com/vallie0aiw
http://twitter.com/maragretdf -
Inappropriate?Me too, 2 this morning. I didn't bother to click the link so I don't know what kind of spam, but it's obvious that that's what it was.

Inappropriate?While not the best solution:
We can now also report spammers by sending a Direct Message to Twitter's @spam account.
To do this, you'll first need to follow http://twitter.com/spam. You can then send a direct message to @spam either by:
1. Typing a direct message from the "What are you doing?" box
Ex. d spam @spammy1, @spammy2 are spambots!
2. Sending a direct message from your phone
Ex. d spam @spammy3 is yet another spambot
3. Composing a direct message at http://twitter.com/direct_messages

Thanks for the suggestion! I'm doing this now. -
i don't have time to do that... :( i've gotten 5 in he last hour. if this keeps up? no more twitter.... -
Inappropriate?I've gotten two this morning
http://twitter.com/verla675rg
http://twitter.com/micaelanrd
and in researching their websites via google, I found:
Twitter / paulitaylf
Twitter / kishari6uu
Twitter / starr5d43v
I guess if they follow me I will have to keep blocking them and hopefully twitter will get the hint and ban them. The sad thing is, they will probably just join again under a new alias and do it all over again. -
Inappropriate?Dido, this is not good, I will have to stop using twitter if I keep getting followers with pornographic profile pics, please stop this kind of stuff.
While you are trying to figure out how to stop this, I would suggest that you allow a feature to block profile pictures of people following you. That way, you can, without seeing their porn profile pic, view their posts to see if they are spam....just an idea....
I’m not at all happy

Dido, block profile pic and spam button -
Inappropriate?I have the same problem, two this morning
http://twitter.com/lesaxofilu

Inappropriate?8 today, I think it's related to how often I update (also around 8 today).
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? There's a simple solution - give us a "spam" tag next to "follow." If someone accumulates X Spam tags (say, ten in 24 hours) their account get suspended until it's reviewed by a human.
I’m Annoyed
-
Can someone explain to me how to do this? "give us a spam tag next to follow" does not give me enough instruction i'm afraid. -
@wendywheeler : Hittman just made a suggestion for the Twitter developers: to add a new button on the form, next to the follow button.
I'm afraid that is not something you can do, unless you are a software developer at Twitter.com :) -
Got it. Thx. -
Inappropriate?I'm fairly certain that these are automated (bots) that are requesting these. I think that a good way to fix this would be to provide us (the users) with the ability to force them (the people requesting to follow us) to use CAPTHA prior to submitting the request. This would stop the automated messages that we're seeing.
-
Inappropriate? My estimate: 1 spammer is creating 1200+ accounts per hour (more like 2000-3000), each linking to one of hundreds of domain name, and has been doing this at least since 2008-10-15 05:00 (UTC) By now, it could amount to some 20,000 spam accounts.
For example, see http://search.twitter.com/search?q=%2... -
Inappropriate?I've had this too. As soon as I blocked one, two more started following. I think it's one person, automated some way or other.
-
Inappropriate?I've had 2 in the last 12 hours:
twitter.com/jadaecbmgy
twitter.com/leonilabwk
I’m annoyed
-
Inappropriate?I've received from
rosa0rkavm
junkoib749
I like the Hittman's idea about a spam button, but a CAPTHA would work also. Another idea - user must accept anyone who wants to be added as a follower (a space for a "note" from the follower to identify by name or other note would be good, since we usually use screen names rather than real names).
I’m frustrated
-
I believe I have mine set up to require me to approve anyone who wants to be added as a follower. Still - I DON'T want to be getting notification for all this crap, and I don't want to turn off notification, because there might be a real person waiting for me to approve him/her. -
Inappropriate?paulitaegl, magdalenbb and several others that I have blocked. All announcing they have posted new vids - exact same message
I’m rolling eyes
-
Inappropriate?nothing new to say, same prob
but i'd make sure people know to avoid even clicking the links that are being posted. bad things can happen. :-)
I’m hopefully anxious
-
Inappropriate?So far I've had:
http://twitter.com/pamakej0p1
http://twitter.com/clarytotal
http://twitter.com/skyexjub40
http://twitter.com/suanneeleu
As soon as I blocked the first one, the next two showed up. After I blocked them, the fourth one showed up.
I’m annoyed

Inappropriate?Funny thing is each post in this thread has an. "inappropriate?" link in it. That's what we need in the feeds. Actually if you could combine this and the captcha it would make a huge difference.

Inappropriate?Had 4 this morning - Please Solve this!

Inappropriate?I got a few of them today. Each with 1 tweet and following about 5 people.

Argh. Getting new followers is becoming less exciting as it's almost always spam now. It's people like this that mean we're not allowed nice things.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?me, too. Got the requests within an hour of each other, and they're all very similar to porn-spam I see in chat or email.

Inappropriate? One so far for me. Didn't follow the link:
katharinau -
Inappropriate?Had six so far totally fed up, blocked them all. Cannot believe Twitter let this go on. Will close account if this continues.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?Also: eleni7uws0, machelledu
-
Inappropriate?Only joined Twitter yesterday and have got about 8-10 of them, wont bother using if this keeps up. I have blocked them all, what a pain!
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Ditto. They're skirting the Follower Spambot by just creating hundreds of accounts. Surely you can deep-scan through link posts like PopUrl and spot all the accounts pointing to the same site? Hell, this could be a great feature to put into Summize searches!
I’m wanting preventative action
-
Twitter needs a report abuse feature that's on the home and profile pages, as well as a way to quickly view who you've blocked. It would make it much easier to track who you've had to block. -
Oh definitely! Blocking is not enough - I want to report it then and there! -
Inappropriate? My twitter account is to update my family on my 2 year old's activities. It's really disturbing to find porn sites attached to people who are supposed to be "following" her activities. It's disgusting and disturbing to find these. I have blocked the following 2:
cayla8kuci
theresia6s
they both link to the same "chat room" internet site. Twitter, I hope you are finding a solution to this.
Thank you, Karin

Inappropriate? Thanks for the heads up, guys. We've found and fixed the problem causing this particular spam attack. We're now working on removing all of the spam accounts created.

Inappropriate?I accepted an invite from http://twitter.com/giovannamu, now I'm getting spammed! Will unfollow her now and hope it stops. Since accepting fro @giovannamu:
(I have not followed these requests)
http://twitter.com/rebbeccaiv
http://twitter.com/claudiair9
http://twitter.com/kennethyvu
http://twitter.com/rhebamk9ut
They all have only one post that says something like this:
"Hello... Check me out... I uploaded alot more vids http://www.checkerltd...."
Thanks,
Mary-Lynn
@marylynn3 -
Your example link is an affiliate link redirected one or twice to a registration page for another social network. Why? You act like a spammer. -
Ian, I am certainly not a spammer. I am just reporting what has happened to me. I thought by adding the links, I was actually reporting them as spam. That's the only reason I included them. Maybe I misunderstand what this message board is about. -
Your Twitter feed does look genuine, albeit with a link in most posts, however you're example isn't obviously a spammers link until clicked upon. Also a female name with a number on the end is the format favored my most spammers so I would suggest you change your username to something more relevant to your show or without a number. -
Ian of course I have links in most posts! Like most good social media users, I share links to great posts and articles I've read, and occasionally to my own. I signed up for Twitter a little over a year ago, and couldn't get just plain "marylynn" so I added a 3 at the end. At this point, I don't see myself changing it. Again, all I tried to do here was report spam. -
Inappropriate?I think I had eight spammers - all of them sent to @spam but what is the format for sending a direct message to http://www.twitter.com/spam? I guess it's "d spam spammername". Thanks.
-
Hi Ian, you can send a message like this:
d spam @spammername
This turns it into a link and we can quickly investigate :) -
Inappropriate?joycelynmz spammed me this morning.
-
Inappropriate?I usually figure out the affiliate ID that's buried in there, then find out the final destination and report them to the site owner. Many site owners will cancel an affiliate account if they are using spam to get clicks. The sad thing is just as many site owners don't care how they get links or clicks.
