tinyurl is a great service, but it still takes up too much space. For links, instead of:

We could just enter
#tc53j
It saves 19 characters. (A lot to people who post a lot of links) Other possible characters could be %, ^, and ~.
If more url-shortening services become available, it could just redirect to the service chosed in account settings, or each character could be for a different service.

Inappropriate?It would need to be a character that is easily accessible from phones, which is why I suggested the #, but for following characters should be okay:
! % ^ &
Given that % can be used for other things, I wouldn't suggest that, and & can be in URLs. ! and ^ could work. Given the two, I would prefer !. It's very easy on phones, and generally not used in messages in that form.
