SMS and Twitter direct messages idea
So this struck me this morning as I sit in a hotel room and am trying to get some information to a colleague already in a meeting.
Usually, I would just call or SMS him but I brilliantly forgot to bring my charger. So faced with a dead phone, it would be great to be able to direct message him via twitter for him to get the message.
So what I would propose would be to add the following capability.
d FONENUM message
where FONENUM is not advertised or directly addressable except through DM.
Twitter already knows this information and I figure it would not to be too hard to expose. And since it's not exposed unless the number is known, there should not be an issue with people scooping numbers.
I know there are services like teleflip out there but I like Twitter and being able to do messages through twitter. =)

Inappropriate? So does the Twitter Direct Messaging that currently exist not work the way you're wanting? Don't direct messages go through to the user's phone?
I’m a little confused

Inappropriate?i think he's proposing that twitter become an alternative to teleflip and other online SMS services... e.g.
d 4155551212 message
instead of emailing 4155551212@teleflip.com or 4155551212@txt.att.net

Inappropriate?@quepol - Thanks! I had some momentary panic wondering if I thought this through. =)
Amy, I agree that it is possible and doable right now to directly msg someone by name.
I was just thinking in the context of straight SMS which as quepol points out I can just text message someone via a number. I pretty much access Twitter through a desktop app now and it would be immensely useful to be able to do SMS through the same interface. -
Inappropriate? It could be pretty viral for twitter, too, since you're texting non-members, inviting them in implicitly. Meanwhile, users would get this handy SMS archive.

this is one of the best points

Inappropriate? My thoughts exactly =) Would be another great way to increase twitter subscriptions.

Inappropriate?Although I like the idea in principle, I fear that something like this will be open to abuse by spammers who wouldn't think twice about using Twitter's infrastructure to send unwanted sms messages to people.
I’m anti-spam

Inappropriate?True. I guess if this were possible as a default opt out with an option to opt in would be good. I'm personally willing to tolerate a little bit of spam for a chance to have conversations with people I wouldn't otherwise know.
Another option is to restrict to friend of friend.
