SMS not getting through
Currently it is hit and miss whether SMS get to/from Twitter. Both my tweets and those of others have a ~50% chance of getting through. I am on AT&T with a iPhone

One of my contacts recently tweeted:

So at least some SMS texts are being posted on Twitter several hours late. -

Maria929, it might be worth it for you to contact Sprint customer support and check if shortcodes in general and 40404 in particular is blocked for your account. Sprint seems to have a habit of doing that. You'll find a link to Sprint's customer support at this related thread. -

Since you're in Canada and can't even verify your phone number, your problem is likely to be a different one.
• If your current number has never worked with Twitter, click Incomplete Canada Mobile Setup.
• Otherwise, click Duplicate Account aka Username1 and, if that appears to be your problem, work through those instructions.

Hi, at one point my phone number was verified but I was unable to post Tweets by phone. They never showed up. So I deleted my number and attempted to re-verify, but am now unable to complete the process. -

In that case, I don't believe you need repeat the Incomplete Canada Mobile Setup process, since Twitter once completed that for your phone number.
Since you deleted and unsuccessfully attempted to re-verify your number, you almost certainly now have the Duplicate Account aka Username1 problem: your phone number is trapped in limbo in an incompletely registered duplicate account. This is especially likely if you made more than one attempt to send an SMS verification code (something like xyzxy) to Twitter. Try to work through the instructions at the link I posted above.
However, since Twitter SMS appears to be unreliable at the moment (the theme of this current thread!), that may not not work too well at the moment, either. -
I've tried to work through the instructions, but my phone number is not listed at all in the system. -

On the Twitter Status page at Canadian Short Code problems (3 Nov 2008), Twitter now state:
We’re working on problems affecting users sending and receiving text messages over the Canadian short code.
If the SMS verification code can't get through at the moment, because of the above-mentioned Canadian SMS problems, that will cause problems too.
It might now be a good idea to contact Twitter (via support at twitter dot com) as suggested at the Incomplete Canada Mobile Setup link.
Include all relevant information - and a link to your post(s) in this thread too, which should help speed things up a little. -

I noticed the "Duplicate Account aka Username1" but that fix did not seem to work for me. So far, I have completely deleted my phone number, re-added it and sent the verification once and will just leave it at that for now.
Hope this gets fixed as I was just starting to get into twitter again...

My last successfully posted update was on the 29th, but I didn't try to send any on the 30th. Two failures on the afternoon of the 31st, several more since then. (I've been sending a message once or twice a day to see if they go through, but no such luck.)
The online billing for my cellphone lists all outgoing texts, and they're still showing messages to Twitter as sent. It's just that nothing happens when I send them.
No word back from my support request.
Has anyone heard anything back from theirs? Getting sad at all the "The company is aware of this problem" notes on other threads here, with this one still free of employee acknowledgment... -

If you're in Canada on a mobile number that was working with 21212 up to Oct 28, 2008, but you can no longer send tweets via SMS, you should now follow Emee's recommendation to assist Twitter in resolving this problem by adding the information requested to the thread

Inappropriate?Maybe this issue is causing me to not be able to register my phone as a device. I'm in the USA, I entered +16085551212 (last 7 a substitute for the real number) as my phone number. I sent a text message containing the code to 40404. I get no response, and no change on the device page, even after logging in from another browser. Provider = US Cellular. It doesn't seem to be the username 1 problem, because when I enter my phone number on the account/complete page, it says my phone number isn't registered. I waited overnight to see if the status changed - no luck. So I did the "delete and start over" a couple of hours ago, sent the code, and still no luck. Any other ideas?

I haven't been able to verify my phone as a device. I entered my number (+16085551212 format). Sent verification code to 40404. Waited overnight. No change to the verification page when reloaded. Deleted and started over. Repeated the same steps including waiting overnight, and still no response. It doesn't seem to be the username 1 problem, because when I enter my phone number on the account/complete page, it says my phone number isn't registered.

I have not received a SMS tweet to my cell phone in 4 days. I can SMS my own tweets and they are received, I am not sure how quickly as I am rarely at my computer when I use twitter. I follow about 12 people via SMS device updates and I am getting ZERO updates to my device. Help please!!!!

From just spinning thru these it seems like US Cell users have one prob, while Sprint users have a seperate prob.
USCell users can GET tweets, but not send any.
Sprint users can SEND tweets, but not get any.

Right before this started happening a few days ago I started receiving the same tweets twice in a row through SMS. My twitter friends are not receiving all my updates via SMS either, though they appear to be posting to the web just fine. I miss receiving twitters!
