Sprint, SMS, Text Messages

Is Sprint not compatible with Twitter? I tried to set my phone to twitter, but it says that my number can't support SMS at this time.. yet I get texts all of the time. Isn't it the same thing? I have no interest in using it to send messages TO twitter. I just want to receive them... I'd appreciate some help.. thanks!
