suggestion: don't send direct message instructions every single time?
every time i receive a direct message, it's postpended with a "reply with d USERNAME hello". cool. can i opt out of these instructions? they always spill into a second text message (i don't have unlimited SMS on my plan), and i don't really need to be reminded every time. maybe if i haven't received a direct message in a couple weeks? or if it could just be a preferences option to provide helphints or not.

I agree. We all know we can text for instructions... Why not put a smart filter in place and say after the first 20 or 40 direct messages to a phone, remove the helper text.
I leave direct messages on for SMS and I bet 50% of my tweets end up being split into two messages, despite the core message only being 140 chars.

Yes, PLEASE fix this :( It seems optional (the help text isn't really needed at all, if you turn on SMS, you know how to use twitter) and is making my experience worse. I would estimate about 90% of my direct messages fall into 2 messages due directly to this text. About 30% due just to that damn 'hi' text.
My ideal message would read:
"DM via username: This text can be shortened by a whoping 24 + username length! That's a 17% minimum optimization!"
I’m irritated

Inappropriate? What do you mean by an unlimited plan? Are there still providers which charge for sending short-messages to their customers?
But I agree, it's annoying and very costly (for twitter) to send two messages because of those tips instead of just one.
Maybe twitter.com should attach them only to messages short enough to fit all in one or using just a few characters for a second one and use the rest.
(Hope this got a full, understandable sentence, its nearly 4 in the morning *hehe*)
Maybe an Opt-In/Opt-Out way would work; or a "not more than x messages/day/week"-attempt.
I’m fine but tired

Inappropriate?Twitter just needs to shorten their "tip" text so that it will absolutely fall under the SMS character max. If a tweet is 140 chars, then their tips need to be less that 20 chars.
8 time out of 10 I receive two text messages for each direct message. I, too, am on a limited SMS plan (only 200/month) and these really eat away at that!

since 9 months later they still haven't fixed the double-message problem, i'd like to suggest another plan of attack:
if i've received a direct message on my phone, then never send me a tip again. assume i've figured it out and don't need them. (just realized Josh Owens says the same thing a few messages down.)
also -- the problem is even worse now... if a message splits into two, i'm no longer receiving the 1st one! meaning, all i get is: "2/2 Reply with 'd quepol hi.'
infuriating! -
Inappropriate?I agree. This needs to be toggleable. I hate getting those instructions every time. It's like, "Yeah, I effin' know! I've been using Twitter for almost a year!"
I’m irritated.

Inappropriate?Same problem here, about 90% of my DM's cause this spill over to happen, DOUBLING my text message usage. I too am on a limited text plan, so that's an increasing problem unless this is addressed soon.

Inappropriate?YES! This has been driving me crazy the past few days. PLEASE let us turn those off.

Inappropriate?How about something simpler. If message_length < (140 - tip_length) then show a tip otherwise no
-
The problem with that is that SMS messages double in size when sent internationally, so it could take up to three SMSs to send 140 characters + a tip to Canada, or India (and previously, everyone else, before twitter removed the UK long number). They'd want it small as well... -
Inappropriate?I too am on a limited SMS plan, and getting one tweet for the price of two is a pretty raw deal. Isn't the point of the 140 char limit to keep it in the SMS limit?!?

Inappropriate? If the help message must be sent, quepol's suggestion makes the most sense. Ensure length of help messages isless than 20 characters, so Tweet + annoying help message <= 160 chars.
I’m going to turn off SMS if this isn't resolved
