Twitter Dupe account or not?

i closed my twitter account a few months ago, but wish to create one again. when i sign up, it says my email is already in use, so i go to the password recovery page and enter the same email, it says that the email is not in the system and cannot be found.

What can I do? I really don't want to open up a new email account just to make a twitter account.
