Twitter/Facebook syncing should prepend " twittering: " or similar
Populating the Facebook status field with the most recent Twitter post is awkward, because Facebook automatically adds "is" to the beginning of the status. I propose that it would be better to prepend " twittering:" to any status update coming from Twitter. This would make the phrasing less awkward, eliminating status updates like "John Doe is I'm really tired today." It would also let people know that the update came from Twitter.

Inappropriate? This is a totally brilliant idea. I just turned off auto-updating Facebook via Twitter the other day because the awkward sentence construction was driving my inner grammarian crazy. BUT doing this would totally solve my problem, and do more promotion of Twitter on Facebook.
Brilliant, I say! Do it, Twitter! Do it!
I’m twittering this idea, too
-
Inappropriate?I just turned on the auto-updating this morning and was not looking forward to dealing with the "is." Excellent work-around!
I’m surprised I didn't think of this!

Inappropriate?Great idea!
I’m still trying to figure out the best way to update Facebook status automatically with Twitter

Inappropriate?Great idea. Alex coded it up and it's live now.

Inappropriate?Hmm... It didn't seem to work? Just posted 4 minutes ago... "Alexa Weber Andrzejewski is Excited I can update Facebook status via Twitter!" -- but no "Twittering:"
I used twitterific -- does that matter?
I’m perplexed
-
Inappropriate?Hmm now it worked... and I'm thrilled! I wouldn't have signed up to sync statuses if this weren't added. :-)

Inappropriate?Yes - there've been a couple of notes sent to us that echo this desire.
In this case, we thought the change was a clear improvement so we avoided a setting. But we're continually evolving the FB app to incorporate more feedback.

Inappropriate? Why not test the first word of the tweet; if it's "is" then there is no need to add "is twittering: "
In PERL:
if(first_word ne "is") tweet = "is twittering: " . tweet; -

Inappropriate?I'd like to be able to send only certain tweets to update my facebook status, not all of them (perhaps by appending a short tag to my tweet). Is there a workaround for this?

Inappropriate?I've never had a problem working with the "is", and whole-heartedly second an option to turn the "twittering:" off, or to append rather than prepend it.

Inappropriate? It would be great if we could choose from a couple different templates for our twitter import -- "is twittering: " / "is thinking:" / no prepend / append.
-
Inappropriate? Also, just speaking for myself, it would be cool if we could set that by in-SMS command (similar to direct messaging).

Inappropriate?how do I automatically update my facebook status with Twitter? Can i do this with myspace too?
-
Inappropriate?Your best bet with MySpace might be to find a widget that displays an RSS feed.
-
Inappropriate?and what is that? Whats a widget and an RSS feed? Why isnt there an idiot's guide to this? Lol. Im going to have to wait until i get to a computer to install the facebook app because im on an iphone. But if i install the facebook app it will go directly to my updated status just as if i did it through facebook without twitter?
-
Inappropriate?Widget = chunk of code used to display some predefined thing on a website (e.g. a countdown to the next episode of Heroes or a list of recent news stories).
RSS feed = a machine-readable file containing a list of updates to a website or blog, used for syndication. Twitter has them for each user (with or without their friends' updates).
Your Twitter updates will go straight to your Facebook status (give or take a few minutes), provided you tell the app you want it to update your status.
This is heading rather rapidly off topic, so I think I'll leave it there. Hope this helps. -
Inappropriate?Another vote for an option to remove "Twittering:" Now that Facebook has removed "is", the problem has vanished. Maybe rather than mentioning Twitter in the status field (ie "is twittering"), you could append a small icon to the end of the tweet indicating it came via Twitter. I personally simply want my tweet to appear in my Facebook status with nothing added!

Inappropriate?> Now that Facebook has removed "is", the problem has vanished...
Huh? Facebook hasn't removed the "is" as far as I can see. Am I missing something? -
Inappropriate?Hasn't yet. Is about to.
-
Inappropriate?Ah, great - about time. Then, yes, I agree there's no need to prepend 'twittering' by default any more. It would be nice to be able to choose to prepend tweets with a custom message, though. I'd personally like to prepend mine with '[from twitter]', both to raise awareness of the service, but also because otherwise I fear my largely non-techie facebook friends will wonder why I keep posting all those geeky links in my status update :-)
-
Inappropriate?From http://www.facebook.com/developers/me...
"Additionally, users.setStatus will be able to avoid prepending the word “is ” by passing in an additional parameter: “status_includes_verb”. If you pass in true for that parameter, it signals to us that we should *not* prepend the word “is ” to the status you give us."
It means that the twitter Facebook app must be updated to add the additional parameter for this to work. -
Inappropriate?I'd really like to get rid of the twittering! Any idea if/when this option might be coming?
I’m sad

Inappropriate?I'd much rather have it not say twittering at all. It's annoying and it makes me want to delete the facebook app.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Haven't really checked it out properly yet, but the TwitterSync app appears to allow you to choose what will be prepended to your message.

Thanks Timmy, that worked. -
Inappropriate?Saw this tweet from @ev today:
ev: Poll: Should we get rid of "is twittering" when we post statuses to Facebook? http://poll.fm/col5/
Also, have tagged this and similar topics with "is twittering" to make them easier to find. -
Inappropriate? The best solution seems to be to amend the facebook app to allow users to choose whether their tweet is prepended, and if so by what text. Also, as I said earlier in this thread (6 months ago) it would be great to be able to choose which tweets update facebook by using some sort of tag in the tweet, or at the very least a tick-box option to say 'don't update status if message starts with @'.

Inappropriate? From Ev as of 11 hours ago:
Ev: 70% of people said get rid of "is twittering" (http://tinyurl.com/557j6u). It's now gone. (For simplicity's sake, there's no option.) Thx!

Inappropriate?Bummer :(
-
Inappropriate? This is stupid. I'm uninstalling the application right now. People are idiots--don't listen to them. Now people's Facebook status will make no sense.
I’m pissed at the stupid change
-
Inappropriate?Twittersync rules. I just switched due to the fact that Twitter's app removed the "is twittering" and made all of my Facebook statuses sound stupid!
I’m happy now that I found twittersync

I'm glad you found a solution that works perfectly! 8-) -
Yeh, it works well. I'm just surprised Twitter didn't make it an option. Go figure. Anyway, Twittersync appears to work perfectly. I don't want to have to worry about the grammar of my statuses not making sense on Facebook. The 70% must either write in the proper voice/format so that it makes sense on Facebook, or they don't care that it sounds goofy. I think I'll change the "Is Twittering" to "Via Twittersync" to give them a little free advertising. -
Inappropriate?Just installed twittersync too. Thanks for the tip mrdctaylor! (Would be good to be able to add more than one filter, though...)
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate? Please let me provide a customizable string, or at least give me a choice. My tweets look silly on facebook without preface and it was an easy way to signal to my friends that I use twitter, and that they should look for me there.
I’m annoyed!
-
Tim - as per the above posts, use the third-party twittersync application to update your facebook status rather than twitter's own offering. That gives you the option to prepend with a customisable string (like mrdctaylor, I'm using "[via twittersync]" to give them a bit of publicity) as well the option to filter certain tweets that you *don't* want to update your facebook status (e.g. @ messages). -
I recognize that twittersync is *a* solution. This is still a defect in the official app, which I would prefer to use, and I thought I'd "cast a vote" as it were. Thanks though. -
Indeed - and they should fix it, but I guess twitter's developers have a fair bit on their 'to do' list :). I have no problem with switching to a TP app, though - particularly one with far better functionality and which doesn't even ask for my twitter password. After all, Twitter's success has been in large part built on the openness of its API and the explosion of TP apps and add-ons. -
Inappropriate?I'd like to bring this topic back alive and say that now whenever I update my twitter, facebook doesn't make sense. Now that the "is twittering" is gone, my updates look like this: "Jesse Does anyone want to play a game of StarCraft on Battle.net?" That looks horrible. But I've noticed that twitter basically displays the same thing on their page. Perhaps the fact that it's a link and a different color on twitter makes the difference? Even adding a colon would be better: "Jesse: Does anyone want to play..."

Good call, that would be nice. -
Customized prepend has been a request for months (actually since the official twitter fb app was developed). It's been done by other twitter-fb sync apps, but all requests for this have been ignored by the official app people. -
That doesn't mean that we shouldn't keep this issue alive. I don't understand why this isn't an option. Again, it looks ridiculous. It makes me feel like I have to write things in the 3rd person, like, "Jesse is writing something. And he feels he should be able to do it in the 1st person, because, guess what, I'm Jesse." I think that's silly (and some people even do this on Twitter, yuck). Point is, there should at LEAST be an option. -
Inappropriate?Does anyone know how to turn the twitter link to facebook OFF? My tweets (which are usually work-related) don't always make sense on my facebook wall.
