Inappropriate?A few minutes ago I was seeing API HTTP Basic Auth Required (Status 401) when making requests for the json timeline feed at http://twitter.com/statuses/user_time... . Since this was used in a badge on another site, I suspect many end users were getting such authentication-required messages.
http://www.megatokyo.com/scr33n/scr33...
But it's returning normally now. What happened?
kuramori:~ alan$ curl -I http://twitter.com/statuses/user_time...

The same request is now returning a rate limit exceeded message. -
Inappropriate? This just started happening to us too. We removed it from our page (http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2) but within the past hour it suddenly started asking users visiting our page to login to the Twitter API.
-
Inappropriate?I'm seeing it on my blog and someone else's. Both blogspot.
A wordpress blog I read has a working twitter feed right now.
I don't care for myself, but it must be a turn-off for readers to see that.
I’m annoyed
-
Inappropriate?i am having this issue too. i use wordpress.org and yahoo hosts my site. if i look around on the net, every person that has a twitter "widget" has the same issue, regardless of blogspot/wordpress.
-
Inappropriate?I am seeing it on every website that uses the Twitter flash widget. Really annoying.
USER: midwestkel
BROWSER: Google Chrome
I’m confused
-
Inappropriate? So it's not just my blog. I just went ahead and removed the widget altogether. :(
-
Inappropriate? This is happening on my blog, as well. I think that I am going to remove the widget until this is cleared up.
I’m annoyed
-
Inappropriate? Thanks for reporting this. We're aware of the issue and are working on a fix.
Thanks for your patience in the meantime.
The company says
this solves the problem

Thanks Emee. -
Thanks Emee. If there's anything we can do on the user side to help, let us know. Thanks again! -
Inappropriate? Also happening on my blog. I had the Twitter javascript badge but I've disabled it now.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?same thing here, wow, talk about a bad user experience! I disabled it on my blogs.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate? It's worth noting that it *sounds* like Twitter is close(ish) to having the resolution: http://tr.im/hope
I’m hoping it'll all turn out okay.
-
Inappropriate?I did a quick and dirty fix, editing the Twitter URL that includes "callback" so that the URL was xxxtwitter.com rather than twitter.com. That seemed to take care of the problem on my blog. With all of the security issues over the last few days, I think everyone's really antsy about the appearance of this one.
I’m blah
-
Do not replace twitter.com with some domain that is not Twitter, or your own site! Doing so gives that site access to your user's cookies, and generally allows that site to run any JavaScript they want to on your site. It's better to just remove or comment out your badge for the time being. -
That's not a fix, or even a workaround. You're sending every visitor's browser to do an extra DNS lookup on xxxtwitter.com (which does exist, appears to be a pornographic parking page), and then make an HTTP request to that server, which returns a chunk of html instead of a 404 or javascript blob. User's browser sees script errors trying to execute it. Recommend to instead comment out the script. -
Oh no.... best not be a pornographic parking page. Or this will be a big bad thing for beloved Twitter! It happens so often and so many in a few minutes (the popups) that it is driving me freaking nuts! Can barely concentrate on searches or email or anything fun on my puter.... I say it be done away with and only be used by those who are making applications. And then enllighten we the masses how to avoid it and fix it so we can enjoy being online! Ya think???? -
Inappropriate?Seems to be fixed for me now. Anyone else?
-
Not fixed for me. Still seeing the popup when I go to any site that calls on the Twitter API, including the main Twitter website itself. -

Inappropriate?Hi guys,
Thanks for reporting this problem; we were able to fix it pretty quickly and everything should be back to normal. If you're still having problems, please submit a ticket to support:
http://twitter.com/help
and include the site you were visiting when you got the pop up.
Thanks!
Crystal
-
Odd. Still happening for me. I'll file the ticket Crystal, thanks. -
Inappropriate?yep - still happening - usual story, plenty of workarounds, none of which seem to actually work. And now the fine folks at twitter are treating me like a spamer and locking me out continuosly.
if i wanted "try this", followed by "No -he's wrong -try THAT instead" ad infinitum - man, i'd have gone to the Joomla! forums :)
I’m confused

Inappropriate?Same problem here: we're trying to set up a blog with Blogger that has Twitter feeds from half a dozen people. I tried using the original Twitter badge, the Afterglide script and half a dozen other tools, everytime I get this nasty popup.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I get this popup regularly, but in an additional twist it comes up underneath my firefox and I can't raise it. It does however steal keyboard/mouse focus on occasion, under which circumstances I can hit ESC to kill the popup.
(I'm on Mac OSX 10.4)
I’m frustrated, but glad I found a workaround
-
Inappropriate?I should have come earlier with the solution, at least to my problem with Afterglide.
As it happened, the problem was NOT with Afterglide, but with one of the tweets I was following, that was set to private. Hence the password request.
I asked the tweeter to make her tweet public and, presto! the problem disappeared.
Hope this will help some!
I’m relieved
-
Inappropriate?Contrary to Crystals reply -the problem is NOT fixed -i get the API request - on twitters homepage! the only way i can use twitter is through a third party app like tweetdeck.
Much as i love using twitter - between the security issues (2 weeks of changing passwords and no help from twitter) and little code things like this - it seems theres a way to go before it'll be a money maker.
Please stop marking this problem as solved -it isnt solved. (Neither for that is my old account that keeps locking me out - i ended up having to bail on the account and set up a new one due to zero help on that one -cheers!)
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Oh - BTW - i think your help ticket systems broken too - i tried a help request and never got a reply. And i tweeted customer service to no reply... Thanks.
-
Inappropriate? Why is this marked "closed?" I cannot find a solution to the problem of the Twitter API asking for a login in a popup on my blog! WTF?
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Uninstall oder delete the VEOH plugin or another plugin which uses the Twitter API and the problem will be gone.
I’m god
-
Inappropriate?I just uninstalled all my FireFox Twitter Add-Ons....
and the annoying Authentication pop-up seems
to have taken the hint.
I've added my favorite PowerTwitter addon...
still no pop-up.....
Bliss ;-)
I’m a happy hopeful...
