Twitter needs to support push notifications on the iPhone
Third party developers for Twitter would like to support push notifications for iPhone OS 3.0. Unfortunately, there are technical reasons we can't do that without Twitter's help. The developers at Twitter are aware of this limitation and are working with Apple to address it.

Inappropriate?Well,IM+ already has Twitter with Push Notifications, and I don't know why it can't be also for Twitter apps for iPhone...I think there are all the APIs necessary for make an update with Push Notifications...it's cool...it's done,it can be done!
I’m undecided
-
That's pull; not push. These notifications are not instantly pushed to users, instead the server polls Twitter every few minutes looking for changes to push, eating through user's API requests. -
Inappropriate?Ok so? I didn't understand what is it
-
The issue is that IM+ only keeps you logged in for 24 hours so they can afford to pull Twitter data for every user logged in at that time.
For a dedicated Twitter app to properly support push notification they would have to be polling the Twitter stream on behalf of every user every couple of minutes. Since they have to use your API requests to do that it would cause other applications (like your desktop Twitter app) to hit the rate limit and not be able to do anything.
Added to this, it still isn't push, it's pull with a push component. To do push properly, Twitter would need to pump it out from their servers which has all sorts of problems anyway (if you have multiple Twitter apps, which should it push to?).
The only way to resolve this is for the user to nominate a Twitter app to receive the push notifications and Twitter to handle it all. It would be economically impossible for the free or cheap Twitter clients to handle the infrastructure needed to maintain the persistent connection to the Apple push servers and handle the Twitter processing as well. I wouldn't be surprised to see Twitter roll out push and introduce it a a premium option i.e. one with a monthly subscription cost. -
Inappropriate?Ok,I understand now,thank you

Inappropriate?I'll go on record as saying I could care less if it's "push" in the traditional sense. Even if an app only polls the API four times a day, I'd be happy. Of course, that's just one man's opinion, and clearly I'm not some sort of "twitter thought leader."
Craig, are you saying that iPhone notifications simply can't be done with the tools at your disposal? Not even if they're on a timed interval?
And an observation: I know it's not the integrated solution that everyone's clamoring for, but what about RSS? If Twitter isn't jumping to accommodate on the push front, isn't it still true that you can subscribe to whatever Twitter information you want via RSS? Personally, I still haven't settled on a real "winner" RSS app, but I'd imagine the game is gonna get real interesting, real soon. First developer to put out an RSS app that supports iPhone notifications on a per-feed basis gets my money.
I’m excited
-
There is no RSS feed for direct messages, which is what most people will want a notification for.
Polling at timed intervals is possible, but it will eat into the limited number of API requests you have each hour. Also, for a server to poll for tweets, a third-party server would need to maintain some kind or username/password or OAuth token.
And before you jump on the first app that supports push notifications, please think about how easy it will then be to switch to another app in the future (it won't be.) Twitter has succeeded because of interoperability between clients: we'd like to see this kind interoperability extended to push notifications. -
Thanks Craig, that puts it into perspective. As for the "look before you leap" advice, I definitely hear you. Truth be told, I'm not likely to buy anymore iPhone twitter clients. Between you, @atebits, @buzz and @camh, I'm pretty sure at least one of you will make the magic happen :-D -
Inappropriate?I think RSS App is gonna be great
-
Inappropriate?Ok if anyone has a new update for this issue please to write here something to profit.

Inappropriate?Put together a little tutorial on how to setup Twitter iphone push notifications using Tweetie here: http://www.davidschultz.org/2009/07/0...

This is the first comment that has made me wish that GSFN had "favorite" functionality. This doesn't exactly "solve the problem," but you definitely get a gold star from me. :)
Thx! -
Inappropriate?Who of you have tried Tweet Push app for iPhone? Comments about it?

I have it, and it works great! Almost instant notifications. Gives Twitter mentions the same priority and treatment as SMS, and I love it.
