US Cellular customers cannot verify phones or post tweets via sms (Nov 2008)
If I update via text, my tweets do not show up, and have not been for a few DAYS.
I have tried txting "ON" and get no response
I have tried texting "HELP" and get no response from twitter either.
I've also tried some "GET" commands, etc, and it seems like twitter just isnt hearing my tweets.
However, I AM GETTING all tweets from friends. Everything comes INTO my phone fine, but nothing from me is getting back to twitter.
This seems to have started the same day twitter fixed the @ problem with USCell users. (Which was awesome btw!)

I haven't been able to verify my phone as a device. I entered my number (+16085551212 format). Sent verification code to 40404. Waited overnight. No change to the verification page when reloaded. Deleted and started over. Repeated the same steps including waiting overnight, and still no response. It doesn't seem to be the username 1 problem, because when I enter my phone number on the account/complete page, it says my phone number isn't registered. -
After seeing Jayson Frye's reply that his is working now, I decided to delete and start over, and I was able to verify my phone and receive a tweet. So far, so good! -

No, it said it on the website. I no longer get the code when I try to save my phone. Of course, now I can't verify it because my carrier is now having a text message outage of indeterminate length. Le sigh. O, strange world that has such technological tribulations in it..! -

Hi BreakTheBox. Yes, MetroPCS is knwon to not support Twitter's 40404 shortcode. It's on the list of carriers that don't support shortcodes, which you'll find here -

Hi Liona. There's a good chance that your phone number was not entered in the format that Twitter expects since it says it can't sent you sms. That message is usually displayed to international users.
Can you please try re-entering your number at http://twitter.com/devices in this format: countrycode areacode phone number (with no leading zeroes or spaces).
For example: +12125551122, where
+1 is the country code for the US
212 is the area code
5551122 is the phone number

I changed it to so that I no longer have that message, and tried sending in the new code it gave me, but i still havent gotten anything saying it was confirmed or anything. -
Hi Liona. The fact that you were getting a response to ON earlier suggests that you might have inadvertently created another account that's tied to your phone now.
Can you kindly try entering your phone number at http://twitter.com/account/complete and see if it finds an account that's different from your @summerkins account?
If it does find one, then there's a good chance you have the Duplicate Account aka username1 problem. The solution for that (and the explanation of why it happens) can be found at another thread (click here) -
I typed in the code it sent to my phone, and got sent back to my home page where it said 'You're already logged on so you can't create a new account' (or something to that extent) when I signed off, it took me to the create an account page. -

Hi Liona. Oh, does this mean you were able to get into the duplicate account? Unfortunately, user deletion is currently disabled according to the Twitter Status blog.
Until they turn user deletion back on again, I suggest you set the account to private at http://twitter.com/account/settings so your tweets aren't visible. Oh and please remove your cellphone from the http://twitter.com/devices page of the duplicate account so you can add it to your real account. -

I believe you currently have the Duplicate Account aka Username1 problem, which will prevent you successfully registering your phone with your craiglindner account (created April 2008). Any SMS text you successfully tweet from your phone to 40404 will be posted in the phantom craiglindner1 account (created Nov. 2008, presumably by one of your recent unsuccessful attempts to re-register your number).

This problem existed BEFORE the craiglindner1 account was created. I created that to see if it was an account problem. Same thing there. Not able to verify a device. None of my tweets are going to that account at all. I also can't delete the account. I keep getting an error. Still need some help! -
Also, When I enter my phone number in the complete account link, it doesn't find anything. I'm pretty certain my phone number is not linked to any account in twitter right now. -

I know you've tried before, but I figure it's worth another try because there are two other people in this thread who are also on Sprint who reported having trouble with sms.
Both of them ( sonnenblumen and tragicfreedom) have since been able to verify their phones and get sms working again.
Sonnenblumen reported her problem 12 hours ago, and it looks like sms began working again for her 11 hours ago. -

Just deleted and re-added my phone with no luck. Still can't verify. If think the craiglindner1 is an issue, go ahead and delete it. I can't. I don't think that's the issue, since this problem predates the account by over 1 month. -
Hi craig. If you're not able to find an account using the account complete form, I think it's safe to assume no other account is using your phone number.
I wonder... does your phone auto-append a signature to your outgoing sms? A verizon user in another thread realized that his sms signature line was messing up the verification code. After he removed the signature line, he was able to verify his phone. Could that be the case for you also? -
Nothing appended. This started happening several months ago now. About the twitter stopped sending SMS to overseas numbers. At about that point, I lost all SMS activity. Not sure if it was linked, but timing was very similar. -

One last possibility just occurred to me: Sprint is known for blocking shortcodes even when their customers haven't asked them to. Is it possible that shortcodes in general or 40404 in particular has been blocked for your account?

Eric, since you receive a response to HELP, could you kindly try setting up your phone again, but make sure to specify it in the format that Twitter expects?
Twitter expects numbers to be in the format countrycode areacode phonenumber (with no leading zeroes or spaces).
For example: +12125551122, where
+1 is the US country code
212 is the area code
5551122 is the phone number
If you've entered the number incorrectly in http://twitter.com/devices and tried to verify your phone, Twitter will not realize that you're an existing user. It will ask you for your name and create a new account for you.

The inside_a_box1 account was first updated 13Nov2008 11:51 GMT; last updated 20Nov2008 14:02 GMT [ca. 5 h ago].
So once that's cured as per standard instructions, there's a good chance texting should work again, as allconsoffun describes. -

It's OK if you don't actually delete the duplicate account yet: Twitter's Account Deletion seems likely to be out of service for some time yet.
The important thing is to remove your phone number from its http://twitter.com/devices page.
Before you do so, note down the exact format in which your number appears: it's exactly how Twitter expects your number to appear when you add it to your true account later.
And remove any e-mail address (which will otherwise be locked to that duplicate account) from its http://twitter.com/account/settings page, too.
If Twitter demands an e-mail entry there, enter a fictitious address (something like noreply@inside_a_box1.net) instead. -

+1 is the US country code
212 is the area code

It won't let me register my phone number, and gives me this error number: D1051. I'm on a Samsung Behold if that makes a difference. I have checked to see if the duplicate account was the problem and it's not. There is no account with this number registered. So why can't I register my phone? I don't even get a chance to verify it, it just flat out won't take it. (And yes I've already checked the format, it's correct.)

Inappropriate?Any issues which first appeared at approx. 14:00 UTC on Thursday 6th. August 2009 or later may be side effects of the massive DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack on Twitter and related services via the Internet.
As a result, many parts of Twitter - and 3rd.-party applications such as http://dabr.co.uk and http://m.tweete.net - are working poorly or not at all. Even updates from the phone are disrupted for many users.
I hope things will be back to normal within a few days - though of course I've no idea if this will be the case.
To keep up to date with Twitter's attempts to get things back to normal:
• Follow @Twitter (if you can follow people at present)
• Read Twitter's newest posts at http://status.twitter.com and http://blog.twitter.com/
Meanwhile, some 3rd.-party alternatives (which have worked for me at least partially):
• http://dabr.co.uk is actively devising workarounds and has a list of @dabr mirror sites
• http://tweetgrid.com worked for me even whilst http://twitter.com was officially 'down' on Thursday afternoon.
