UK Twitter text costs
The Twitter number used for the UK isn't considered a UK number by any major UK mobile phone network, and so costs UK users vastly more than normal text messages, despite having a +447 prefix.
My understanding is that the number used is from the Manx Telecom range. The Isle of Man is not part of the UK, although we do share a head of state and a telecoms numbering range.
If Twitter is going to continue to use an Isle of Man number for text updates, it really needs to add a big fat warning somewhere to UK users will be charged rather a lot of money for text messages and they won't be included in normal text bundles.

Inappropriate?20p (vs 5p for a UK sms) on T Mobile's Text Appeal plan.
People keep telling me that their mobile phone provider treats it as a UK sms, I'd like to know if that's true, or whether they don't notice.
I’m poor

It's not included in 3 PrePay's text bundles, for sure, nor T Mobile's Flext. I'm pretty sure it's not part of Vodafone's bundles, either.
I wouldn't mind so much, but most UK SMS providers charge about £50pcm for an inbound (real) UK number from which the messages can be forwarded to a web service via an API. -
Inappropriate?Looking at this site (and a quick google) shows that 3 and T Mobile charge twitter smses at international rate.
I haven't (yet) found data for the other networks. I have one person on my follow list who tells me their orange plan charges it at the standard UK rate.
I’m wanting information!

Well, that's a good start—though are those messages included in SMS bundles, or does it just charge the UK rate flat?
Plus, of course, just T-Mob and 3 are a reasonable chunk of the UK market—nobody's going to switch mobile providers *just* because Twitter texts cost a sane amount, they'll just stop sending texts to Twitter instead. -
Inappropriate?Hi. Kindly see this reply in a related thread.

It's probably fair to say that you'd be in the minority if you were to! -
Inappropriate? On O2 they go out of my text allowance and I'm not charged extra.
-
Thanks! So we just need news of vodafone.. -
Inappropriate?I have a load of friends on the isle of man, and text them regularly. I'm on Orange and only ever get charged standard rate.
I’m an ex-manxman

Inappropriate?I've just posted my proposed solution in the related thread indicated by mdy earlier.
I’m hoping Twitter can get the wording right...

Inappropriate?I'm on Orange pay as you go. Text messages to Twitter are not taken from your bundles or allowances. They are now charged, currently at 20p per text message. This is a recent change, ie in the last three days or so. So much for "unlimited UK texts".
I’m getting very irritated

T-Mobile charge 20p per Twitter text on their "Text appeal" rate which is supposed to be 3p per UK text message. It has nothing to do with the +44 for UK users - the mobile networks have just decided that they want to screw users for money so texting Twitter has become a lot more expensive overnight.
Twitter can't be held responsible for what operators charge their "customers" (When I find a provider who doesn't charge ludicrously to text Twitter, I'm off to join them) but it should make it clear that "UK customers should be aware that the 07624 801423 number is not always charged at the standard UK text rate".
I’m pretty brassed off
