Using Twitter with mobile device in India
Hi, I am from India.
I am having an account at Twitter. I am planning to send updates about our organization to all members.
Please reply to following queries:
Can other people in India follow me using their mobile phone, even if they are not having account at Twitter.
Can I invite other persons from your website, or do I need to SMS each one of them.
Does one needs to visit your website for registration, or can it be done through mobile device as well.
Please guide me with proper procedure as well for above mentioned activities.
Also, please advice if MTNL and Airtel are responding to Twitter number in India.
Thanks.

Inappropriate?1. No. They need to have Twitter accounts. They get notified if you send a tweet because they are "following" you on Twitter. Without a Twitter account, they can't do so. Twitter can't be used as a mere SMS gateway by specifying phone numbers and sending to all. At least not as far as I'm aware.
2. I'm not sure if Twitter has an invitation page. You can however mail your contacts with a link to twitter.com, asking them to a) sign up, b) start following you on Twitter (for this you have to provide your Twitter ID).
3. It has to be done online.
4. If they are savvy enough to sign up for an e-mail account, they should probably be able to figure out how to sign up from the home page. Heck, my grandmother could sign up for Twitter without assistance! You will have to provide them with your Twitter ID so that they can add you (start "following" you) after signing up.
5. If by "responding" you mean "are able to receive messages from Twitter", then the answer is yes. If on the other hand you're talking of sending messages to Twitter, I'm not sure. It depends not only on the network provider, but also the region (for instance, Airtel Delhi is not the same as Airtel Andhra Pradesh, and each region/circle has different rates). I would suggest using the Vakow! service (number: 9910554321) as a Twitter gateway. It uses the Twitter API and will probably cost you less than the 5566595 short ("premium") code.
Hope that helps.

Inappropriate?Re #3...
If Twitter's India shortcode 5566595 behaves like the US shortcode, then a new user can register by phone directly by sending any message to the shortcode.
Twitter will respond by asking them for their name. When they reply with a name, Twitter will create a new account for them and post the message that they sent as their first Twitter update.
Folks who have registered via the mobile phone can then later create a web login id through the Account Completion page. -
Inappropriate?Ah. Didn't know about mobile (pre-?)registration.
Also, for No. 2, I just realised that you can use the "invite" command in from Twitter.
INVITE phone number
will send an SMS invite to a friend's mobile phone.
Example: Invite +91<10>
