Hey everybody -
This is a result of some of the caching changes we made during last night's maintenance window. While those changes have made the service more stable over all, there have been some unintended effects.
We're aware of the problem and are working through it. It may take a bit to resolve but we are on it.

I've got good news. We've caught up with this issue and we're currently backfilling the timelines. This will take a few hours but once things are caught up, we should be back to delivering all updates in a timely fashion. Also, we will have successfully moved to the new memcaching scheme—which will make Twitter better, despite the bumpy road we took to get there.
I’m thankful

Colin had a solution that worked for me: http://cdevroe.com/notes/twitter-sort...
How to fix your Twitter cache
It is really simple. Follow someone you are not already following. And then un-follow them. Refresh your Twitter page and you’re all set. Your cache has now been restored.
I’m happy

Seems like reverting the live version back to the previous version before the upgrades would be a better temporary solution, especially since it's already been over 24 hours since the issue began. Then the cache updates and fixes could be worked out on some dev/testing install before taking live again.
How useful is twitter if its primary utility--sending and receiving updates to/from your network and friends--isn't functioning?
I’m hoping the issue is resolved soon. We are all feeling lonely with it being so quiet.

Inappropriate?I'm having this problem too. Only seeing updates from a handful of people I follow.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?I'm not sure if this will make a difference, but I am getting all of my updates on my mobile phone, but none of them are coming through to the web sites.
I’m missing my updates
-
Inappropriate?Same problem, been only showing about 8 (of my 116) contacts for about 9 hours now. And if I go to most of my contacts pages I see tweete that aren't in my timeline for the last 9 hours. Pweeze fix.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Same as FrRalphz. I have noticed tweets showing up on my phone and not in Twitter or Witty. I can check those I follow and the tweets are listed on their page. It appears random.
I’m I want my updates
-
Inappropriate?Got the same problem as above. Since this morning i've lost contact with a lot of peeple i follow. Can't see the twitters they write anymore.
I’m sad about it
-
Inappropriate?Same for me! (twitter.com/malarkey) I'm only seeing a handful of updates and it's been like it all day.
I’m sad and frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Add me to those experiencing this problem...
-
Inappropriate?i am not getting any updates from the people im following. only thing in my timeline since last night are my updates.
-
Inappropriate?Haven't seen a tweet from anyone I'm following for 15 hours. Where is everybody? I'm lonely...
PS Why am I a cupcake? -
Cupcakes are the default avatars here, I think. -
Feel free to change it! -
Inappropriate?It's also affecting the api...
-
Inappropriate? My tweets show up in my feed just fine. I have the issue that I need to refresh to see other people's new tweets in the "feed" but this doesn't help here. Their tweets are on their pages, not mine. I'm not blocked or not following them, or anything like that.
I’m annoyed
-
oh yeah- last update was from an aussie, 12 hours ago. 19 hours ago from last states-side followed person. -
Inappropriate?it seems to have begun while they were doing system upgrades to improve performance. I guess it did the opposite.
I’m dissapointed
-
Inappropriate?I have this problem too. It's affecting both web and API. I don't have tweets going to my phone, so I don't know how that's working.
I’m confused
-
Inappropriate?I've had this problem for the last12 hours. Oh- Twitter powers-that-be, please help.
-
Inappropriate?I have the same problem as the other 21 who have replied to this post, except that I'm getting updates on my mobile but not on the web.
I’m confused
-
LOL, make that 22.. :) -
Inappropriate?maybe they aren't showing up because people can't post. i keep getting the "Something is technically wrong" page when i try to see my twitter page. i just assumed they were still updating but it looks like a lot of people can see their pages while i still can't.
-
Inappropriate?I think the most frustrating thing is that we have no way of knowing if anyone at Twitter is even aware of this problem yet. From what I can see of their own tweets, it doesn't look like it, and the twitter_status account doesn't show anything either (as usual). One would hope after what they did last night that someone would be monitoring this site for reports of any problems, since this is, I guess, the official support mechanism. And if anyone is monitoring this site, we need an update.
I’m frustrated.
-
Inappropriate? Not working for me on the Web or with Twitterific. However, if I visit their individual pages I can see their updates.
I’m wanting my updates!
-
Inappropriate? There are tons of people having this problem. be sure you tweet to whomever sees your tweets to come here and report the problem and pass it on. Let's see how twitter works as its own backchannel.
I’m annoyed
-
Inappropriate?Same problem posted here:
http://getsatisfaction.com/twitter/to... -
Inappropriate?Same sadness for me. Although I do follow more than 800 people, so there has been some chatter, I've had to consciously go to the pages for various people I really want to hear from but haven't. I know they aren't hearing me, either....

-
Inappropriate?I have now had this issue for almost 24HOURS please fix this. If that means reverting to the old version you should until you can find a way to improve the service without causing this problem.
I’m frustrated and disappointed in the service
-
Inappropriate?Would someone at Twitter please update the Twitter status account: @twitter_status to indicate that there is a problem and it is being corrected?
I’m frustrated.
-
Inappropriate?@twitter_status has been updated as well.
I see that Satisfaction has marked my last update as "The company says this solves the problem." Just to be clear - we know the problem is not yet fixed. We still have work to do. -
Thanks for responding. We'll try to be patient :D -
Inappropriate?Okay, at least I know what's going on then...
-
Inappropriate?Apparently, when you unfollow and refollow someone, your cache is updated, and that serves as a temporary fix to the problem.
Fwiw, a Twitter user (@bodyvisual) wrote up a little script that automates the whole unfollow / refollow process for folks who are following a lot of people.
It's available at http://twitter.bodyvisual.com/missing/
I just tried it now (of course I temporarily changed my password to something else first) and several updates that had previously been missing are now visible on my Twitter home page.
Note: I don't know if this is a permanent fix, nor do I know if all the missing updates are now visible. And I don't know if this is what made the difference. But I do see a difference.
Just sharing this info, for what it's worth.

that worked (at least temporarily). thanks for the post. -
Awesome link. cheers! -
hmm. seems to have been temporary. not getting new tweets since fixing using this method. -
Yes, the effect does seem to be temporary. I've also tried experimenting by just unfollowing and refollowing one person, and that also seems to refresh the cache. -
The effect is temporary - as it only refreshes the cache - so the first time you reload the home page, you will get it, the second time, you will lose the people again.
That said? rather than unfollowing and refollowing someone - following an account that doesn't get notifications - like CNN and unfollowing them works just as well, and doesn't pepper your friends with 'xxx just added you' notices. -
I followed J.Phil's advice, only I just un-followed one of my least favorites and that did the trick; that is, there didn't seem to be a need to find someone new to follow before un-following--unless of course you were afraid of losing them, follow? -
It doesn't take that much time. I went to @bodyvisual's TwitterFixer site, then opened a new browser tab where I logged into Twitter and changed my password, then went back to the TwitterFixer site to enter the username and new password. As soon as it finished, I went back to Twitter and changed my password again. Entire process literally took less than half a minute (and I follow over 900 people). -
Inappropriate?Haven't received any updates since just before midnight April 18th.... Feel like i have missed sooo much
-
Inappropriate? That explains a lot, server cashe problems. Since yesterday, there has been quite a few people in my twitter stream I'm not see any tweets from. Only way I know what they are doing is to visit their twitter page.
The bodyvisual TwitterFixer will only work for a short period of time for me. Only the people at twitter can fix this problem.
Hope the cashe problems are fixed soon. I have a feeling there are more than a 100 or so users having problems. Many don't see the problem until I e-mail them.
I’m knowing the pains of fixing cashe problems
-
Inappropriate?I am one of those users who has ceased to exist on Twitter's timeline for a lot of people. Really weird. Feel like I'm tweeting alone. Like I've been muted. So not fun.
Any idea when this will be fixed?
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?i'm still missing about 80% of my tweets in my feed. this has been going on for close to 24 hours. buggers.

Inappropriate? And here I thought all my buddies had simply decided to walk away from 'technology' for a while and enjoy their weekend 'offline'.
Hoping to see this get fixed soon.
I’m sad, but this 'outage' gives me an excuse to focus on other things...
-
Inappropriate?Since yesterday fewer and fewer people can see my tweets. I have just over 900 followers.
Thank you.
I’m frustrated and feel a little isolated from friends
-
Inappropriate? In some way I'm glad to hear this - I thought it was me. I don't have to fix it. But for the record, no tweets for 24 hours.
I’m unconcerned
-
Inappropriate?Really missing my tweet feed! Occaisionally I get a tweet, but then it goes quiet for a long time again
I’m lonely
-
Inappropriate?Guys - if you didn't read thru the comments above - a *temporary* solution is to follow/unfollow an account and refresh the home page to see new tweets.
Currently, the cache is having 'issues' and they are working on it.
I find it's easy enough to open a second tab with an account that doesn't get follow notifications (like @CNN) and follow, then refresh home page in other tab - read, then unfollow again, refresh home page, read...
Nicer than sending your friends a lot of 'xxx is following you' notices.
I'm sure Twitter will get the cache issues fixed soon enough.
I’m mildly annoyed
-
Thank you--I have tried this. It has unstuck a few of the people I am following, but doesn't help the people following me see my tweets unfortunately. :-( -
This doesn't work very well for me when I don't even know which people's tweets I'm not seeing and twitter itself isn't seeing me! :-( -
Inappropriate?Seems like reverting the live version back to the previous version before the upgrades would be a better temporary solution, especially since it's already been over 24 hours since the issue began. Inappropriate? No pressure guys-but Tuesday is Penn. Primary and Web 2.0 and New Comm Forum kick off next week too. of my 2000 plus followers, only a handful can see me. They all think I'm dead.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?Also-when you say it will take some time...are we talking like hours or days or weeks? Attempting to plan alternate coverage...
-
Inappropriate?Having only just jumped on this twitter bandwagon, I gotta say, this isn't the greatest welcome party. I'm looking forward to an update, even if it's just to disclose a timeframe for the fix.
I’m frustrated.
-
Inappropriate?wow, this is not good. How many people are going jump off the Twitter ship for this? And where?
I’m annoyed a little.
-
I'm thinking Pownce or Jaiku. -
Inappropriate?I'm starting to get irritated that the upgrade hasn't simply been reversed until this caching problem can be worked out in a test environment.
I’m annoyed
-
Inappropriate?its still broken, is there any news from twitter about how long it will take to fix this problem or back out the changes they made, twitter in its present form is useless.
I’m confused
-
Inappropriate?twitter, are you running out of bandwidth/servers? WHY NOT roll back this stupid caching thing. Hint- even if something does work for YOUR accounts, if it's broken for everyone else, you need to fix it.
I’m also angry this hasn't been rolled back yet
-
Inappropriate? Please revert back to a working version and figure this out on your own time!
I’m wanting to talk about this on Twitter but can't.
-
Inappropriate?I read the response from "Gold Toe" ( Umm, ew. ) and as of Sunday April 20th at 3:15 PM it is still an issue. From what I can tell, I haven't gotten visable updates from the people on my friends lists for the past 18 hours - But if I click on their profile I can see all the updates they have made since the issue began. Are those missing updates going to appear later? I can do without I guess.
I’m slightly grossed out that the guy working on the issue is named "Gold Toe"
-
Inappropriate?I am quite frustrated by this and hope that it gets fixed soon. I can't believe a company that has this many problems but is not out of business.
I’m fed up.
-
Inappropriate?nice upgrade, twitter broke it's reason for existence in the trade-off for stability.
-
Inappropriate?Last year, this cache issue because of an upgrade used to happen monthly and it often happened on a weekend. Twitter hasn't had a cache issue like this in 4 or 5 months. Patience. - BarbaraKB
I’m patient
-
Inappropriate?!@#$ you all. Seriously. Twitter is FREE. You haven't paid a cent to use it. You still don't pay a cent to use it. It's not a god given right, it's not a utility. Don't like it? Stop !@#$-ing whining and build your own social network. Go buy a server, install Rails, set up one of the open source Twitter clones, and take your stupid friends and your whining with you.
I’m irritated.
-
you might want to take a deep breath -
Inappropriate?I'm only getting tweets from 2 people I follow. Lets hope that it gets fixed soon
I’m hopeful
-
Inappropriate?follow/unfollow someone like BBC or CNN- that will clear your cache (temp. fix)
I’m happy there is a temp fix
-
Inappropriate?looks to be (heh) US centric. USian followed of mine? problems. Aussies? no problems.
I’m amused- usually the other way around.
-
Sorry, Alison, I'm in Oz, and I'm having all sorts of issues with US and Aussie tweets. -
I'm in Asia and have this problem too. 8-) At least we can confirm that there's no geographic discrimination going on. LOL. -
Inappropriate?yet another ditto from me. also having this problem for at least a day or more. i've noticed, as have others (i.e. Alison), that doing an unfollow/follow of someone you're following (or a follow/unfollow of someone you're not following, if i read Alison correctly) will cause all updates up to that point to show up, but no new updates show up. hoping goldtoe, et al, manage to get it resolved soon. didn't realize i'd become a twitter addict until i stopped getting updates.
-
yep, you read me correctly -
Inappropriate?I hope you can fix it soon. I would hate to see interest wane because of flaws in the core functionality.
I’m anxious
-
Inappropriate?Seems like this has been going on for a rather long time now. Trying to be patient. Keep seeing replies to people I follow and I never saw the original tweet. Frustrating.
I’m waiting for an update on what's up
-
Inappropriate? If it's a caching issue, it's not an aging issue -- it's a pretty pervasive thing. Lots of my tweet-buds are coming up blank, and so are their tweets. Sometimes the fix is worse than the problem...
-
Inappropriate? Most of my followers cannot see my tweets... it seems to be just a twitter...
I’m sorry for my poor English
-
Inappropriate?Only getting tweets from 4 people I follow. Been happening since sometime friday, which places me at 48+ hours. Having been on Twitter for a couple weeks, this blows. I was just getting into the addiction. Waiting patiently.
EDIT: Oh, and I've noticed that occasionally a tweet I compose and post does not show up anywhere. That's not good.
I’m sad, yet getting more done around the house.
-
Inappropriate?Since no one has said anything for a whole day, I will... it's still a problem, but it's not just tweeters with "lots" of followers not showing up.
Possibly a separate issue, today only my entire web time line only updates about every hour (refreshing the browser doesn't help), and then it updates all at once, about an hour worth of tweets. This was not a problem yesterday when the tweets first went missing.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?I have missed alot of tweets from people I am following, would be nice if the problem was fixed soon, other than that I am exploring life outside of twitter land.
-
Inappropriate?I sympathize. Same 4 me. No new tweets 4 me since 11:50PM April 18. So sad. I was just getting used to the Twitter Universe and now I am cut off. So cruel. I was really starting to like it,
I’m disconnected
-
Inappropriate?Seems to me that Twitter doesn't know who is following who to a large extent. I can see all my Friend's Tweets in Friendfeed but only a couple of them in Twitter
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Twitter:
You need to step up to the plate and be more communicative about this situation. A short post more than a day ago is not a sufficient response from a customer relations perspective, and your really doing yourself, and your users, a disservice. As soon as you realized the problem wouldn't be corrected immediately, you should have put up a notice just like you did for the original maintenance window, notifying everyone that the web-based and api tweet display was compromised, and referring them to a web site that would be maintained at least every six hours or so with more current information regarding the situation and the steps you were taking.
By not taking professional command of the communication regarding this issue you're letting this thing spin out of control.
I’m hoping you'll say something.
-
Sigh.
I've been trying really hard to be cool about this. I'm a developer. A lot of people on twitter are developers. We know how hard this can be, trying to rectify a situation like this. Furthermore, twitter is a free service, and, as bad as it sounds, you apparently get what you pay for.
However. As mhutchin so rightly points out, we now have a situation where the reputation of a very popular and, to some, vital piece of what has become our shared internet infrastructure has effectively gone down, and, as is often the case with "free" and "open source" software, there is no ETA, there are no SLA's, and there is no word from the developer(s). As an IT professional, I've been dealing with this attitude, defending free services and software to executives both inside and outside the IT world for years now.
It's situations like this that give anything "free" a bad name.
PLEASE, twitter folks, communicate. Give us something to go by. Throw us a frickin' bone here. We know you're busy, we assume that you're hard at work on it, but please let us know what we can expect. Or, unfortunately, we'll find another solution to fill the gaping void this extended outage has created. -
Yes, communication will right many wrongs. -
Inappropriate? Now that I think of it, I was just thinking about how much less noisy Twitter is. I think it's a feature, not a bug.
I’m Meow.
-
Make sure you read up top where a rep from twitter admits to the problem and the fact that they're working on it. -
Inappropriate? My best tweeps vanished. I vanished from a lot of tweeple too! Now some are reFollowing me! Do I have to go reFollow too? Yikes!
I’m pissed

try following/unfollowing BBC or CNN to temporarily clear your cache. -
I used Colin's cache cleaning trick and it works! http://tinyurl.com/6ezos6 -
Inappropriate?A casual observation: my most active Twitter friends aren't getting through to me at all. Some slightly more casual users are getting through. I don't know whether this is related to number of followers or number of Tweets.

Inappropriate?Guys, why don't we give the folks at Twitter a break?
They only have five developers, and three of them pulled a late night on Friday the 18th to keep the maintenance window (downtime) as short as possible. And if you follow them on Twitter you'd know that they didn't get much sleep last week.
I think they deserve a break -- at the very least they should be given a chance to recharge over the weekend. Heck, the last thing I'd want is a tired, sleep-deprived developer rushing and deploying a half-tested fix to a live system that's getting over 300 new transactions every minute.
The day we start paying for this service is the day we have the right to demand 24x7 customer service, regular updates on issues, and guaranteed up-times.
Till then, it's a free service and if you've used the site for a while, then you've already gotten more than you paid for. They've already acknowledged the problem. They have more incentive than any of us to fix it. Let's just be patient.
I’m looking forward to having my Twitter streams back to normal
-
I agree, though I think a lot more people would give them a lot more of a break if they would just keep a one- or two-sentence status message on Twitter.com. Lack of communication leads some to think that they're not responding to the problem or aren't aware of it, which I'm sure isn't the case. -
Yes, I agree that more communication would help. -
Inappropriate?Same problem here. I do get tracking updates though. And Twitterrific is not working at all.

Emergency situation? You need to chillax! -
Inappropriate?@mdy
A year ago @blaine reported that Twitter was handling 600 transactions/second, and that traffic was increasing quickly. They got at least $5.4 million in funding last year, and so they aren't starving, running out of their apartments.
I'm not questioning the hard work, intelligence, or enthusiasm of the developers.
However, I am questioning the company's overall pre-planning that goes on before these maintenance windows and their review process, as well as their lack of communication. It is not like this is the first time this has happened, as they have had problems with this display issue after maintenance before. I thought this was one reason they brought on @jack last December, but now it is mid-April and nothing appears to have changed.
The argument that we have no right to voice our concerns because we don't pay for the service is ridiculous. Most websites do not charge for content because they don't take charge the customer directly, but make it up on the back end through advertising or other means. If cnn.com, or any other website you use regularly but don't pay for reported inaccurate results for two days without even putting up a disclaimer on the front page (which is really what Twitter is doing by showing compromised streams), would you still say we shouldn't complain? No one outside of Twitter really knows how they are going to make money off of it eventually, if they even know, but I do know this: Twitter without the people using Twitter is pretty much worthless.

-
i don't think the problem is number of transactions (though that may be an issue generally). if a large database gets out of sync, it can take a week or so to "re-cache" everything, which i understand. but it would be nice to get an estimate from them for how long it will be before all is back to normal.
thanks twitter folks! -
Mary, thanks for the excellent background to the fix. Most people wouldn't realize that it can take so long. -
Ha ha! "a week or so to re-cache" lol. That doesn't explain why the problem is specific to individual users, such as ME. My tweets do not go to anything but my timeline. They don't even go to the public timeline. This is a user specific issue. What's the real deal? -
Inappropriate?@mhutchin,
Thanks for providing more precise transaction numbers. 8-)
I don't believe I said that people have no right to voice their concerns because the service is free. If I gave that impression, then let me clarify that that was not my intent.
Like you, I also wish that Twitter would communicate more and I have said as much elsewhere in this forum. The difference is that I don't hold it against them when they don't communicate as much as I'd like, since the service is free.
And yes, I know that if people were to stop using Twitter, it would be a failure. I'm sure Twitter knows that too. Which is why I said I think they have more of an incentive than any of us to fix it.
( Side note: You must have meant them bringing in @mighdoll last year and not @jack? Twitter is Jack's idea, so it's safe to say that he's been around since Day 1. )
-
Thanks, yes, I meant @mighdoll. -
Inappropriate?I submitted my own report as I didn't see this one... It's not just the web, it's also via the API too!

And, that message points here.
