weird RSS message
Why do I keep getting this message?
Enter your name and password to update the RSS Feed.
To update the RSS feed "http://twitter.com/statuses/friends_timeline.rss", you need to log into the area "Twitter API" on twitter.com. Your password will be sent in clear text.
I never got this message before and now it pops up on my desktop 15-20 times a day. It only started after i updated my web browser. I haven't changed anything on Twitter.

I found the answer to this problem on Apple's support forum. The problem only seems to occur on Mac OS 10.4 systems running Safari 4. Safari 4 introduced the Top Sites feature that displays thumbnails of the pages you visit most frequently, and indicates if they have changed since your last visit. Apparently, one of the ways they check if the page has changed is by retrieving the RSS feed for the page.
So if you have looked at your Twitter page a few times, it's likely that the Twitter page is now on your Top Sites page, and Safari keeps bugging you to log in so it can retrieve the RSS data. The solution is to go to the Top Sites page (the little grid icon in your Bookmarks Bar), click the Edit button in the lower left corner, and then delete any and all Twitter pages from your Top Sites page. This solved the problem for me.
Here's the link to the Apple forum thread that contained the answer. It's near the bottom of the thread (not the message actually labeled as the answer).

Inappropriate?Mine was in Safari. Here's what I did and it seems to be working, so far. Go to Preferences/RSS tab at the top/Check for updates: Never.
Good luck -
that will work, however it will disable ALL your RSS reeds, thereby rendering the whole concept of RSS moot. There is no way there are only a handful of people who are having this problem. It is clearly related to the latest version of Safari. The part that is bothering me is that I can't even find where that RSS feed is located to remove it from any of my feeds. -
Inappropriate?Mine also started after I updated my Safari. It is the MOST annoying thing I have had to deal with in a glitch. I haven't been able to find it on my hard drive so I can trash it, I can't seem to get any info at Twitter troubleshooting... this is the first place I have actually discovered that others are having this problem. I've emailed Apple to get an idea if they're aware this is a bug in the last update but I haven't heard anything yet. I will post any reply I might get. (I emailed them about a week ago.)

I just tried it...if this works, I KISS THE GROUND YOU WALK ON....LOL -
If it works for you, please press the "This solves the problem" link just below the comment so other folks will know that it worked for you. Thanks. -
I definitely will....I hate to say it but so far so good....gimme another day and if I don't get it....I'll definitely check the "this solves the prob" THANKS! -
cool, but it is going to quickly become one of my top sites again once i start returning to twitter.com right? -
ok...this seems to have worked....THANK YOU! I will go to the "this solves the problem" tab and then I am OFF Twitter...never really liked it anyway! THANKS AGAIN! -
I cannot thank you enough. I have done as you suggested and will be very relieved when I no longer end up typing accidentally and automatically into the "name" field on that extremely irritating RSS thing. And as Jodi A. mentions above, I may take myself off Twitter anyway. I almost did several times just to get relief. But that seemed like killing the patient to cure the disease. This is much better. Thank you yet again. -
@gabe, it should be permanent, because when you delete a page from Top Sites, Safari remembers this fact and won't put that page back on Top Sites. -
@Susan, I think it's worth pointing out this is entirely a problem in Safari, and it just happens to be triggered by Twitter (among other sites). So can't really blame Twitter here. -
@Robert Brewer: Right. Thanks for pointing out it isn't Twitter. I was also worried that the Safari would re-up Twitter as a "favorite" if I went back there, like Gabe mentioned. You have clarified that faulty deduction of mine. I have also clicked the "This solved the problem" option above. Thanks again. -
Inappropriate?I'm having the same problem. I haven't put in my password, I just keep canceling because I don't know where it's going to be sent and it says the password is sent in clear text. This is lame.

Inappropriate?I fixed this problem weeks ago by disabling checking for RSS feeds and also by clearing my cache. I probably also reset Safari. To disable checking for RSS updates, go to Safari->Preferences->RSS and set "check for updates" to never.
I’m happy
-
The downside of the solution you mention is that it turns off all RSS feed updating, which can be undesirable for some people. The solution I posted earlier allows you to fix the problem just for Twitter and leave RSS working for other sites. -
Inappropriate?Many thanks, Robert!
I'd removed the half-hour update by just leaving it in a corner of the screen, so it ceased to bother me - but it's nice to get rid of it altogether!
Paul
I’m thankful
