What does the "Protect my updates" option really mean?
What does the option "Protect my updates" at the bottom of the page at http://twitter.com/account/settings actually mean?
If I check the check box next to that option, does it mean that other Twitter users cannot follow me without my approval?

Inappropriate? It means only the people you explicitly approve will get to see your updates.
More specifically:
- people you haven't approved to follow you won't see any tweets when they visit your profile page
- you have to individually approve each person who requests to follow you, and you can only do this on Twitter's website
- you won't be able to use the Twitter badges since those display your tweets publicly
- people have to be authenticated (userid/password) before they can view your RSS feed
It also means (at least for now) that:
- when you choose to follow someone, they'll automatically get access to your tweets
- when you approve someone to follow you, you are also automatically following them back.
