Where does a tweet that's too long go?
When the tweet is too long (more than 140 chars) is there a way to read the entire tweet?

Inappropriate?I think it depends on how you sent it; when I sent a tweet over 140 chars. via IM only 140 chars. gets resent to those following me, but a link to the rest shows up on the web.
-
Inappropriate?Yes. The whole update is viewable on the web. For long updates, you'll see a "..." in your timeline. Clicking that will take you to the individual page for the update, where the whole thing is visible.

Inappropriate? What timeline? When I click update on a twit that is greater than 140 chars then nothing happens. I feel like I am blatantly missing something....
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate? When you're on the Twitter website, at the end of a long tweet you will see three dots added to the end of the tweet. (Example: Hello, this tweet is a tweet that is over 140 characters (well, not really) What ...) If you click on those three dots, you'll see the entire tweet.
I’m happy

Inappropriate? Thanks Chris, but when I click on 'Update' on the web, it does nothing if it is over 140 chars. Literally, nothing.
-
Inappropriate?I'm having the same problem as youritguy. When I click update nothing happens at all if it's over 140 characters.
-
Inappropriate?I believe you can only post updates over 140 characters via IM currently.
-
Inappropriate?Yeah - we won't let you create updates longer than 140 on the website. But there are interfaces like IM, SMS and API clients that we don't control and longer updates can be created there.
Not a great practice to do so tho' ... anyone getting your updates via SMS won't get the whole thing. -
Inappropriate? Also a good thing to note, is that the "..." isn't linked in API clients (as far as I can tell). So the receiver would have to go to twitter.com/username and click on the dots from there.
Correct me if I'm wrong (I'm judging that on the two API clients I actually use). :) -
Inappropriate?Alright, I don't mean to drag this out anymore than it seems to have been already, but I need this clarified, as it is driving me insane:
-If I Tweet over 140 characters from the Twitter website, it can't be seen in full at all?
-When I try to click any of the "three dots" on any post, my own or otherwise, there's not even a link. In other words, nothing to click, so nothing reacts. (If anything, it pulls a Microsoft Word & highlights on me.)
-A similar topic on this site suggested clicking the time the Tweet was posted to see the full post. You get the individual post, but no full view. Is that because you HAVE to use SMS, IM or another API platform to make posts over 140 characters?
Please help.
I’m confused.

The twitter.com user interface will not allow you to input more than 140 characters.
Only three dots (ellipses) that are links at the end of the Tweet will show the full message; if the ellipses do not look like web links then they won't take you anywhere when you click on them.
If you click on the time stamp of the Tweet, then you will see the full message.
If you want to send more than 140 characters to Twitter, then you must use some other form besides the twitter.com text box.
I hope that answers your questions.
