Inappropriate?I'm not exactly sure what you are asking but SMS messages are paid for in many different ways. Twitter subscribes to an SMS gateway in order to get their shortcode (40404) and they pay their provider according to the agreement worked out. The mobile carriers also pay an SMS gateway service to connect their customers to the SMS network.
You can find more information about SMS Gateways at WikiPedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SMS_gate... -
Inappropriate?From the Twitter Blog:
Reminder: Standard Rates Do Apply
Figured I'd post that even though Chris said he was kidding when he asked the question. haha!

Inappropriate?my question had a serious background.... When someone sends me a direct twitter message i will receive an SMS. I do not pay for. But in capitalism each service has to be payed by someone. So i ask again: Who is paying for this twitter SMS... is this so difficult to understand? I don ́t think - but i did ́nt get the answer. This is NOT kidding :)
I’m indifferent

Inappropriate?Ah. I misunderstood you then.
Right now, Twitter is paying for every message that they send out.
Depending on the user's mobile phone plan, a Twitter user either receives the SMS for free, or the Twitter user has to pay an SMS fee to the mobile phone company. Twitter doesn't charge for the messages that it sends out.
Based on interviews with Twitter's founders, they are currently focused on increasing the user base and are willing to defer revenue until they have a large enough user base.

Inappropriate?I am not familiar with the charge plan in the USA. But, I heard most of them (Verizon, ATT, Sprint, Tmobile) charge mobile phone callers and callees. Does this charge-both-party rule apply to SMS as well? I think ATT has some program to give you 200 SMS/MMS free per month. But, I dont know if this counts for sending only or including receiving SMS/MMS as well.
If that's they charge both parties, consider twitter's traffic, that's a lot of SMS fees they will be charged everyday for relaying tweeds to subscribers' friends. The best is we all get it for free :)
I’m curious.

Inappropriate? What I concern is, if I send a SMS messages to my friends in Africa, I don't know whether they need to pay for receiving the message. How can I figure out that? Many thanks!!!
