Why can't I delete my Twitter update?
When I click the trash icon at the end of my update, I can't delete it. I get an error page. Why can't I remove my own Twitter update?

We have an intermittent bug preventing individual updates from being deleted. This doesn't happen every time, or even on every browser or operating system. We're working on it, but in the interim, I would suggest trying it in several different browsers to see if it works in one or the other.
I’m looking forward to a fix

Inappropriate?Thanks!

Inappropriate? What usually works for me is deleting via the API. Just change the end of the URL from /destroy/12345/ to /destroy/12345.xml and it should work.

... also, once the browser asks for a username and password, use the ones from twitter. -
I don't know what this means. Sorry not tech-savvy. Is this done by right-clicking, or what? -
@Abby - if you are using firefox, right click the trash can icon and choose "open in new tab" then go to that tab. In the addressbar, add .xml to the end of it, then it will ask you for your username and password. Enter in your info and it will be deleted. -
Right-click the trash can icon, choose "Copy Link Location", then go to your location bar, paste the link, type '.xml' at the end, and hit return. Then enter your Twitter credentials if asked for "Twitter API". -
i DONT have a can icon at all! -
Not working for me ... I get "This method requires a POST or DELETE." after adding .xml to the end of the URL. -
No tweets (status updates, as Twitter sometimes call them) or Direct Messages can currently (12 - 14 Nov 2008) be deleted, not even with that .xml workaround.
Twitter have intentionally (but temporarily) disabled this facility as part of the bigger Data Inconsistencies problem - which was presumably made worse by Twitter's 49-minute site outage on 13 Nov.
So please bring your ideas to the Data Inconsistencies thread, which is where I expect the most action. -
Inappropriate? The trash can doesn't work. It "looks" like it's working but when my list of updates refreshes, the one that I tried to delete is still there. Every time. In every browser.
I’m not amused.
-
Inappropriate? It happened to me in Firefox and IE. However, the fix of adding .xml to the URL worked as a temporary stopgap.
-
Inappropriate?I can't delete a particular Tweet as well, not even using the .xml workaround. I'm in Firefox 2.0.0.14
I’m frustrated

When you try the xml workaround, what happens? -
Inappropriate? This issue occurs if your software firewall or browser filter the HTTP Referer header from being sent. For some stupid reason twitter wants this information, which I see as a poor design choice. Very common to block the Referer header as a security and privacy measure and there is typically no way to enable that on a per site basis.
I’m disappointed.
-
I am sending the referer header and still have this problem some times. -

Inappropriate?moeffju's solution worked for me except I click on "copy shortcut" instead of "copy link location". Otherwise worked as he said. I'm on IE7.
-
Inappropriate?moeffju --> That did the trick, thanks :) But of course I'm still hoping for a fix to this serious bug.
I’m happy about the temporary fix, but don't know if I can live with that much longer.

Inappropriate?Neither trying it in three different browsers for Mac OS X (Safari 3.1.1, Camino 1.6.1, and Firefox 3.0) nor using the .xml suffix fixes the issue for me. According to my Stats, my "Updates" is "0," but I still see the tweets that I tried to delete under "Haven't updated yet!" on my Twitter page.
I’m sad

Inappropriate? Please twitter, some simple method to view all tweets and clean out same en-masse. Please, please, please!!! use ie8, google chrome, twhirl, nothing seems to work
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate? The trashcan has suddenly disappeared, both in Firefox and Safari. How do I can get the trashcan back so I can delete an update?
I’m confused
-
Inappropriate?como deletar um post???????? ta com problema?? cade o ícone da Lixeira???
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Fail in Opera, IE, Firefox, Chrome ... opening the individual tweet DOES offer the delete icon, but then Twitter shows the “This feature is temporarily disabled” page. Changing adding “.xml” on end doesn't work either.
I’m indifferent

Inappropriate?taras:
This link explains all (on 12 - 13 Nov 2008, at least): Working on Data Inconsistencies.
So we should all be able to delete tweets again "soon".
I’m unsure how soon "soon" will be, however...
-
Inappropriate?Looks like message deletion is officially back. Was able to delete messages again. Yay!
