Why can't I verify my mobile phone device?
I am trying to activate my mobile phone for twitter. I enter number on device tab in format shown for USA and then send the code from my phone to Twitter, but it never seems to activate. I enter my phone number as +19195551212 (where 5551212 is used in place of actual number)

Inappropriate? If you have this or a similar problem, please post the following information:
• Your country
• The name of your mobile carrier
• The Twitter phone number you use for SMS text (40404, 21212, ...).
This will help in troubleshooting. Thus certain carriers are known to block Twitter's 40404 (etc.), though some can be persuaded to enable the number.
If your mobile carrier is Verizon and you're in the USA (Twitter no.: 40404), please join the main thread for Verizon users with this problem.

Thank you for the reply and sorry it has taken me so long to get back to this. I have confirmed that I am still unable to verify my device. Here is the additional info you requested:
• Country: USA
• The name of your mobile carrier: Sprint
• I am sending the code to 40404
Here is some additional info you did not request:
- I entered my device number in this format: +19195551212 where 5551212 is used in place of my actual number
- If I manually enter 40404 in the To field on my phone's messaging application it resolves that to "Twitter". I have sent the code using both that method and also by adding Twitter to my contacts list with the number 40404 and initialing a message through the contact. -
Thanks for the extra info, John Holtman. Now I can give you a couple of links:
• There is a known issue with Sprint (USA, 40404) who sometimes block 40404 for some users. This is most likely your problem.
Ask Sprint customer service to unblock shortcodes, specifically 40404, for your mobile account.
• Note that currently (as from late Oct. 2008), SMS text delivery is unreliable or nonexistent for some users in the USA or Canada on various mobile networks. This might now interfere with your registration process when you try to send the verification code.
(Twitter are already working on this problem for cases involving Canada or Verizon USA.)
If you think you may be affected by this, post in that thread along with the other users. -
Having your phone verified is a great step in the right direction, though!
Are you in the USA using 40404? Who is your mobile carrier - not Verizon, by any chance? -
Inappropriate?I have tried several time to set up my phone with no luck. I am in the US/T-Mobile. Any suggestions?
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?Twitter has an FAQ page which you can find here: How do I add my phone?
It would help if you could describe at what stage in the phone setup process you encountered the problem. Or what error messages you receive when you try to follow the steps in the FAQ -
Inappropriate?i am having the same problem.....I am using at&t in the usa and the 40404 number. I can't complete the verification on my phone. I get to the point where I add my phone number and I get a code with the instruction to send it to +447624801423. I have tried this in many ways...tried sending to the complete number, the number minus the first two, the number with and without the + sign. I have tried sending the code to the short code 40404. And with all of these i have not received a response and my device status doesn't change.
I am not sure what this means as I am able to communicate with twitter through my cell phone when I text "on" or "off" I get a reply telling my my notifications are on or off. However I have yet to receive a notification. And I am not able to update with my phone. Not sure if I am doing that correctly as I am just sending a txt to 40404. The last question I have is once I get all this set up, how can I set it up so that my updates will also update my status on facebook? Is this possible? Thank you for any help.
I’m frustrated
-
The required format for cellphone numbers is country code, area code, number (with no spaces).
For example: +12125551122, where
+1 is the country code
212 is the area code
5551212 is the phone number
If Twitter asks you to send to +44... then it's possible that the +1 country code was missing at the time you entered the info (which led Twitter to believe that you are not in the US). -
Inappropriate?Drew:
Since you're in the USA, 40404 is the correct Twitter number for you to use.
Whenever you receive an SMS text response to your phone confirming that updates are "on", that is a sign that your phone is correctly registered.
Now try texting on person for each person whose update you wish to receive via SMS text.
You can instead tweet on person (etc.) from your Twitter web page at http://twitter.com/home
Your own phone number should appear on the http://twitter.com/devices page in the format which someone would use when phoning you from overseas. This will begin with +1 (since you're in the USA) and include no spaces.

Eridanus, do you suppose Drew has the username1 problem? Since he says Twitter responds to his phone...? -
mdy - I hadn't thought of that; it's certainly possible.
Here's the link for the username1 problem and fix, just in case. -
the username1 problem and fix took care of my problem. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I was getting very frustrated. -
Drew - Thanks for letting us know it finally works: that's great news :-)
mdy - Thanks for the decisive tip 8-) -
Inappropriate?I'm having the same problem. I'm in the USA, I entered +16085551212 (last 7 a substitute for the real number) as my phone number. I sent a text message containing the code to 40404. I get no response, and no change on the device page, even after logging in from another browser. Provider = US Cellular. It doesn't seem to be the username 1 problem, because when I enter my phone number on the account/complete page, it says my phone number isn't registered. Any other ideas?

Inappropriate?Geoff:
Currently (as from late Oct. 2008), SMS text delivery is unreliable or nonexistent for some users in the USA or Canada on various mobile networks.
Twitter are already working on this problem for cases involving Canada or Verizon USA.
This would interfere with your registration process if it causes the verification code you send to arrive late or never. Try revisiting http://twitter.com/devices in a few hours (refresh the page!) to see if the request to text a verification code has disappeared - in which case your code has finally reached Twitter, successfully registering your phone.
If you think you may be affected by this, post your information in that thread too (or include a link back here) along with the other users. -
Inappropriate?Eridanus:
Thanks. I should have mentioned that I tried this last night too, and came in this morning and my devise page hadn't changed. So, apparently, a few hours doesn't make a difference. Thanks again. I'll post & monitor the other thread you mentioned too. -

I don't know what number I'm supposed to text to, I haven't been able to proceed that far.
I’m disappointed that it isn't easier.
-
Inappropriate?Note: We currently don't support sending SMSes to this number. You may still verify your phone and update Twitter, but we'll never send you a message.
I’m frustrated at this message because it doesn't tell me how I can fix the problem.

Mermaidlost:
Since you're in Australia, the messageNote: We currently don't support sending SMSes to this number. You may still verify your phone and update Twitter, but we'll never send you a message.
is not an error: it indicates that Twitter SMS text messaging outside the USA (and parts of India) is a strictly 1-way affair: SMS to Twitter should appear as updates on your http://twitter.com/home page - but (for reasons of cost) Twitter will never send any SMS to your phone.
You might like to ask another Australian how to enter your number in full international format (i.e. the way someone from another country would call your number - something like +61XXXXXXXXXX - with no spaces, leading zeros or other extra characters). The international code for Canada is +61.
If you entered your number wrongly, just click the Delete and start over? button and enter your number correctly.
Then you'll need to send the verification code (which looks something like wtpmjg) by SMS to Twitter's +447624801423 number.
Once your phone is correctly set up and verified for Twitter, the message on your http://twitter.com/devices page will change to something like:Note: We currently don't support sending SMS to this number.
where +61XXXXXXXXXX is your mobile phone number in full international format (no spaces, leading zeros or other extra characters).
Mobile Phone: +61XXXXXXXXXX
If you need 2-way Twitter to and from your mobile phone, an acceptable interim solution might be one of the paid and unpaid alternative ways of receiving Twitter updates on your phone - a thread which includes plenty of (hopefully useful) links.
Twitter say they are negotiating national numbers for 2-way SMS text on a country-by-country basis - but such negotiations are apparently complex and protracted, and we're unlikely to hear much more before the first new national Twitter number actually goes online.
Read some of the more recent posts in that thread, too. As I'm from the UK but based in Germany, I'm interested in any new developments, and I (and hopefully other Twitterers) will post updates there from time to time. -
Inappropriate?I had a problem with the country code. Since it does not give you a list, I just used +1 for the United States...Dont know if you had the same problem or not
-
Inappropriate? For a comprehensive list of country codes, see http://www.kropla.com/dialcode.htm.
But note that Twitter expects your mobile phone number in the +CC... format (where +CC is your country code). -
Inappropriate?are Australian residents able to subscribe to smsing on twitter? or is it just US & canada? I'm having trouble verfying my mobile to "devices" in twitter too and would love to be able to sms updates to my page
I’m unsure
-
Inappropriate?Pnelly:
Australian residents (and residents of most countries) can indeed send SMS text messages to their Twitter timelines - see my longer comment (please click) above.
Since Twitter won't send you a verification SMS (or, indeed, any other SMS to Australia), the only confirmation that you've successfully registered your phone number is when your http://twitter.com/devices page no longer asks you to send the verification code. Refresh that page to see the change. (Residents of only a few privileged countries - USA, Canada, certain users in India and in the UK - actually receive SMS from Twitter.)
From that point onwards, any SMS you send to Twitter's +447624801423 number will appear as a tweet "from text" in your Twitter timeline (at http://twitter.com/pnelly if your Twitter username is pnelly).
I’m hoping that helps...

Inappropriate?thanks for the info Eridanus however I still can't get it to work. In Australia our mobile no's start with 0411, 0418, etc so what I want to know is HOW I enter my mobile no on the "devices" page - that's the part I can't work out. I've tried 61 and then take the zero off my mob # and it won't accept it - if there's anyone else out there in Oz that can help that would be great cuz this is really frustrating as they don't make it easy for users to understand and I'm pretty much up with most technology but this is ridiculous!
-
Inappropriate?BTW when I put 61 in front of my mob # without the "0" that's 11 digits - twitter won't recognise this. If twitter could put up some kinda of listing with the correct contry codes along with 'how to' enter your mobile no it would be so much easier than trying to work out if you are using the correct code!
-
Don't forget the initial + sign! Replace the initial 0 with +61 (the international code for Australia) as follows:
If your number is: 0411654321 then Twitter expects you to enter: +61411654321 on the http://twitter.com/devices page.
If it still doesn't work, then a successful Australian phone twitterer would be the best person to help you.
I certainly agree that Twitter could help by including a dropdown list of the international codes on the http://twitter.com/devices page. -
Inappropriate?Hi Eridanus thank you for your patience and for replying to my posts I really appreciate it. It seems to have worked, I wasn't putting the "+" infront of the number which is why it wasnt working! lol! Now it seems to be working but cuz i'm in Oz the system doesn't support twitter sending me sms - so it's better than nothing :) thank you again
I’m thankful
-
Inappropriate?Eridanus,
I also can't verify my phone. I started a trouble ticket with support, but have been told to re-add my device which I have done 4 times. Here is my info:
• Country: USA
• The name of your mobile carrier: AT&T Wireless (this company was AT&T wireless then became Cingular and is now AT&T)
• I am sending the code to 40404
If it helps, the e-mail to SMS address for this wireless carrier is:
SMTP Gateway pin@mmode.com --- Legacy Blue email gateway
i.e. 12135551212@mmode.com if my number were +12135551212.
Thanks! -
