Why is my follower count incorrect: it won't go over a certain number?

Ever since Twitter was hacked in the Georgia event, my follower count is wrong, it's lower than it should be. I logged off on Thursday night ( this was well over a month ago) and had 1,017. When I logged in the following morning, I had 170. I add 5-8 people daily and the count never goes over 284. I think something is seriously wrong. I cleared my cache and that has not helped.
