Why won't twitter verify my phone?
How long does it normally take to get a text message from twitter after you set up your phone for the first time? I was instructed to send the verification code to the number 40404, and I have. Many times. I have not received a text message back from twitter yet. It's been about an hour and a half. Is there something wrong? Does it normally take this long?

Inappropriate?Okay, so I just tried to send the number in again, and it worked this time. Don't know why.
I’m confused
-
Inappropriate?I'm glad it worked! 8-)
You can also send ON to 40404 if you want to receive people's updates on your phone (though please note that you may be charged for those messages depending on your phone plan) -
Inappropriate?Okay... so it was working. I don't know why but now it has stopped working. I only got the verification message. I tried to delete and start over, but now it's not sending me the conformation message at all again. :\
I’m annoyed, confused and frustrated

Inappropriate?I've sent the verification code to the canadian # (21212) a couple of times and have not received a verification - sounds like the same problem you are having. I submitted a bug ... will let you know when I hear back.

Inappropriate?Manda, could you kindly provide additional info:
1. Your mobile carrier (I'm assuming you're in the US since you use 40404)
2. Does your mobile phone show up as being verified when you go to http://twitter.com/devices? Or is Twitter still asking you to verify your phone by sending in a code?
3. Do you consistently receive a reply from Twitter when you send ON to 40404? -
Inappropriate?Mike, I know from another thread that Canadian mobile numbers have to go through an extra setup step that only Twitter Support can do (details here) before they can receive sms from Twitter.
Also, the http://twitter.com/devices page doesn't automatically refresh when we send in the verification code. It's not stated explicitly, but we have to refresh the http://twitter.com/devices page before we can see if the verification code was successfully received.
Since you're in Canada, there's a chance that your mobile number was successfully verified, but if your phone hasn't been manually set up yet by Twitter Support, you won't receive an sms confirmation back.

Thanks for the additional info; I actually found that post a little while after I submitted the bug and posted in this thread. I updated the bug with the five points requested by Crystal, so I anxiously await being manually setup :) -
Mike - Don't be too anxious if you have to wait a few days before Twitter respond to your support ticket: they usually seem to have quite a backlog to deal with. -
Inappropriate?I never got a reply back after I set up my phone but I have been getting messages saying who is following me. I was able to send updates and people could see them but I am not able to get updates from others... Any help???
I’m sad

Inappropriate?Jmusic:
Which kinds of updates work, and which don't work?
From what you write, I'm guessing that updates you send by SMS appear in your Twitter timeline but you never receive SMS updates from people you follow.
If so, your phone number is correctly registered - which is excellent, and you should leave it that way.
But if my guess is wrong, please let me know.
If my guess is correct:
If you tweet on friend (where friend is someone you follow - preferably someone who tweets quite often), do you now receive an SMS whenever friend updates?
As a test, you could tweet on bbcnews, since bbcnews usually tweets 2 - 3 times an hour.
Later you can tweet off bbcnews to stop SMS updates from bbcnews.
If that doesn't help, we really need to know:
• Your country (different countries give rise to different issues)
• Your mobile carrier (certain carriers are problematic)
• The Twitter number (40404, 21212, +44...) you use for Twitter SMS text.
Meanwhile, you might like to check if any description on the page Verifying your Phone (please click here) matches your experience, particularly if you're in Canada - or if you're outside Canada, India and the USA. -
Inappropriate?Well you are correct.. I show my updates in my timeline as well as my friends are getting my updates... I also see my friends updates on the timeline online but I am not getting the SMS from them.....
-
Were you able to try any of my suggestions yet?
Even once things are working, it might be a while before you receive your first Twitter SMS update, as some users have reported delays of several hours over the past few days.
Also, if you're in the "wrong" country or on the "wrong" carrier, some extra steps may be needed to get things working (assuming SMS delivery is currently available for your country / carrier) - which is why I asked for the extra information. -
Inappropriate?I did the bbc thing and nothing.... I am in the USA Verizon is my carrier and I used 40404
-
Ah, Verizon! That explains everything, I'm afraid.
There's a new problem (a few days old) with Verizon USA, who are apparently in the process of changing their policy towards SMS tariffs for services such as Twitter.
I wrote more about this in another thread (click here), where many Verizon users report that all incoming Twitter SMS have stopped completely.
You might like to post your details there, too, as it's now the main Verizon thread, and has already gained Twitter's attention. -
Inappropriate?I have sprint and sent the verification code to the number 40404 and it still hasnt added or confirmed or done whatever its supposed to do....
I’m sad

I have Sprint also and can't get my phone to verify. Someone said they had to call Sprint and get their short codes turned on. However I can send updates to Facebook and MySpace so that can't be the problem. It's just twitter. =( -
Inappropriate?I have T-Mobile and first my phone was verified however any status update i would send from my phone wouldnt appear on the actual Twitter website. I deleted the phone from my account thinking that this was indeed the best bet but now im not even able to verify my phone again....it just stays on the screen where it tell you to send the code to 40404....but after i refresh it the screen doesnt change indicating that my phone is still not verified. Help Anyone?
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate?Joel, I suggest you hold off trying to do anything with sms for a few days.
Twitter posted an update on the Twitter Status blog yesterday saying they're encountering issues with sms and api updates.
You'll find more info here: http://status.twitter.com/post/157979... -

Inappropriate?I have T-Mobile and I live in the US and I sent the code or whatever to 40404 and I immediately got back, "Free T-Mobile Msg:Receiver 40404 unable to receive message - Message Blocking is active" wtf does that mean?!
I’m gonna give up pretty soon
-
Inappropriate?I think that means you need to call T-Mobile's customer service and have them unblock the short code. I have Sprint and that's what I had to do. Now I'm realizing that that's the only short code that was unblocked. I tried to enter a local radio contest and got nothing back so I guess I have to call Sprint again and see if they'll unlock the rest of the codes. Hopefully I don't have to specify all the codes I want unblocked.
I’m frustrated
