why would a college student use twitter?
i'm teaching a college course about web 2.0 technologies and showed twitter to my students ... they signed up and are following me and eachother, but many were a bit skeptical as to the value of this new way to communicate. i'm trying to come up with a scenario that will help them realize what twitter does that regular instant messenger doesn't do, or why they might want to continue using it after our time with it in class ends.
what's a problem that they might have that twitter best solves?

Inappropriate?Group conversations. It's all about your individual set of friends and their outlook on the world. It's more passive than IM - you just put your ideas out there, and sometimes people react.
It's useful as a way of blasting all your friends with a piece of information. I have been at events or parties and gotten a Twitter message telling me that another event is on nearby - and decided to drop in to that event on the basis of that Twitter message.
Similarly, if you need some help or suggestions, you can put it up on Twitter and often get useful responses quickly from friends.
It's totally addictive. That said, most of my university friends don't use it. They prefer Facebook, which I think is utterly crap. Horses for courses, different strokes and all that.
