Don't bury your strongest offering

Upcoming's core strength and differentiator is that it plugs viewers into the events their friends are going to (and vice-versa). It's about what my friends and I are doing and are interested in, and that's what I love about it.

On the other hand, the dying old mainstream media (for instance, the SF Chronicle's entertainment section) presents me a lowest-common-deminator selection of the blandest events that hold a bit of interest for most people. To make matters worse, that selection is often chosen by some out-of-touch, middle-aged editor who doesn't share my tastes. Upcoming and similar services save us from that lameness...

BUT– now with the new design, Upcoming is focusing a lot more on lowest-common-denominator events and pushing its core benefits ("what your friends are doing" and "what you're doing") to the sidelines. The vast majority of the front page now highlights lowest-common-denominator events rather than events of specific interest to me. For instance, right now it's emphasizing the Pier 39 July 4th celebration and a Cubs vs. Giants game, neither of which I would attend if you paid me. And this choice of events in the main section looks very similar to what appears in that hopeless SF Chronicle entertainment section... and the entertainment section of SFGate, and 100 different backwards local-entertainment web sites that don't have Upcoming's vision or usefulness.

Please put "my events" and "my friends' events" back in focus and bury the outdated lowest common denominator piece. I love Upcoming and don't want to see it self-destruct...
