I have used USAA for my banking since I was 18 and have loved it, Most of my accounts are there now but that might be changing as my partner of 5 years is getting tired of not being a member and of being referred to as my "roommate" by people at USAA when he has to call in about something. We are getting married this January and I called USAA to see about making him a member as the spouse of any other USAA member could be but was told that USAA does not extend membership to spouses of same sex marriage.
I will miss USAA but it is not worth how it makes my partner feel every time I have to call in about something for him since they won't talk to him about stuff since he isn't a member.

This has been solved! My wife and I were legally married in Connecticut this spring, and today I called to see if I could get her a USAA membership as my spouse. The representative was friendly and courteous, and had the answer right away. My wife is now a USAA member!

Meredith (SU3) May 28, 2010 16:21For the record, this was later RESCINDED, and I have left USAA. I will not patronize a company that dangles equality in front of me like a juicy treat, and then snatches it away when I try to grab it.EditDeleteRemove

So if you are heterosexual and "partners" because marriage scares you. You are considered a girlfriend. even though you own a house together?
-
You have the option to be married. You are roommates with a house unless you decide to get married and then all kinds of priviledges will open to you, unlike the lack of options for same sex couples. Want the priviledge of commitment, then make the commitment and get married..

My partner was allowed to become a member with no hang ups as well. My guess would be that a good many of the staff at USAA are probably disapproving of gay rights, but you would never know it judging by how courteous and helpful they always are to my partner and me.

I tried to add my partner a few years ago and the guy was helpful and he talked to my partner for a bit. I live in england and didnt need auto insurance so just got coverage for when we drive in the states. He said he would add my partner as well. I never really bothered to look into it and now I can't find my partner at all on my profile. Just recently they called me to say I can't have that policy anymore as it was just temporary (but I have had it for 3 years). He asked if my wife had a car here and if she wanted it insured. I said I don't have a wife and not interested. We are now looking at auto insurance quotes. Is it even worth my time checking with USAA?
