Proposed Change to Downloading on Veoh
Veoh is considering a significant change to our download system and would like your feedback.
Veoh has always enabled users to download the original copy of the file uploaded by the publisher. This is a great feature because it allows publishers to upload high-quality, high-bitrate versions of videos and distribute them through Veoh. The problem is that it also requires viewers to install a wide array of video codecs in order to decode and view all the possible video formats. This leads to many support problems.
What we are proposing to do is generate a high-quality H.264 version of each uploaded file and distributed that version on download. The original version would be discarded. We would support resolutions up to 720p and bitrates in the 4-6 Mbps range. Users that upload in high-quality, will still have their work available in high-quality – only the format of the file will be different. This will produce a consistent, high-quality file download for all users in a format (H.264) that is rapidly becoming a standard.
This change would not affect content viewed in the web browser, only content downloaded.
Please let us know your thoughts on this idea.

Inappropriate? You have one problem with this I am an uploader and I would say 70% of the viewers on veoh don't have this codec or the means to convert it to regular avi that is the whole reason we use mp4 and avi the other codecs are easier for us to make smaller files but the average viewer can't watch the newer codecs. So personaly I think this is a bad idea and will upset alot of viewers.)
Also this helps veoh more than the average viewer I convert alot of files and what you propose isn't that good because you can't take a poor quality file and make it better just because you are using a high quality codec. You can't take poor quality and make it better you only make it look worse by enhancing the flawes also alot of people download this stuff and use it in other ways like there xbox to watch on there TV the newer codecs are not compatible for this or for there regular media players. So they can only watch them on your player or a player like a Divx player. This means more work for your average viewer to keep up with the latest software. I know you said High quality files but veoh has a medium range most videos are not high quality. I do like the H.264 codec and use it but not on veoh because people told me after they downloaded the file they couldn't watch it.
I’m confused

Inappropriate? The problem is the codecs right? I thought they'd force/ask all people to download the new codecs upon downloading a video, same as the Compass and other stuff I don't use but have to have for some reason, and then all would be fine. We'll have to wait for a staff member to confirm that. They force so much stuff on you as it is, I'd think they'd be able to easily have you download this too. If not, it may be a bad idea since yes it would piss people off- but maybe everyone else needs to catch up and get the codecs or w/e. I saw on Google they were available for WMP and other players.
As a viewer, I want to see what this high quality format will do with the anime I download. If it works as he says, that'd be really cool. Thats why I say, DO IT...
I’m excited

Inappropriate?I have no problem with h264 but I don't understand why I can upload mp4 but not m4v which are both h264 files. Most of the videos I upload are m4v, I just change the .m4v to .mp4 in the file name so that I can upload them but I don't convert the files from m4v to mp4.
I’m indifferent

Inappropriate? The objective is to have 1 video and 1 audio codec needed. This is a standardized format that should be on all systems.

Just a couple questions since you will be reconverting our videos will you be matching the FPS or going with a standard and a standerd Resolution or matching ours. I just ask because if you are going with a standerd you should let the uploaders know. This way we can avoid audio synce problems, but I hope you will be matching what ever our video is since depending on what we are doing depends on the FPS. Also will this affect the processing time of our videos, or do you think it will still take about the same time to proccess and activate our videos. Thank you for your time and I hope this helps to solve most download problems ^.^ in the future -
I just wanted to ask you also will you have a new download system. The one you use now has alot of problems. Since it works on a share bases of downloading from other users. This will sometime corrupt files or cause them not to download properly. Because were not really getting the origenal file but copys from other users. You use a peer to peer system witch works similar to the way torrents do. I'm not bashing your 1codec 1 audio idea I like it but I think you need to look into your download method as well. I have downloaded friends videos and seen there origenals theres will be fine, were as mine the audio might be off or the file is missing at the end and veoh says the download is complete. I just thought you might like to know. -
I hope you listen to JBird, Veoh Jim, because he is in a class of very conscientious, prolific video uploaders. He and his group of uploader peers, really care about the quality of the videos they put up to share with the veoh vid loving community! ;) -
Inappropriate?Absolutely- even downloaded FLV and Quicktimes have problems on my computer even with the codecs so I'd rather have them in this solid format. I can't play those files on my phone either, but it can play MP4s made with h264 very, very well other formats like 3GP play but have horrible quality even when its the same file. I hope the videos from here will play on my phone, you should think about that audience. So I am interested in what happens and support this. There are some videos I like from here that are in QT, and in the past, I got a FLV once, which is a pain as I said and I have to use Media Player classic, which I don't prefer to use, having them in h2 is awesome I can play them on my preferred, colorful media player. That is a true "upgrade".
It would be wise to include links or a download of the codecs though.
I’m confident

Inappropriate?Would a video of the specs in this picture be within the proposed specs, and would they retain the MetaData?
I’m hopeful that they will
-
Inappropriate? The proposed format might be something close to this:
* Maintain the source resolution up to a vertical resolution of 720 lines. Scale down if the source video is bigger (maintain aspect ratio)
* Encode video in h264 format (likely using features like CABAC coding, B-frames and other encoding options which would improve quality, but make the file not natively play on some systems like iPhone) at a sufficiently high bitrate to ensure good video quality, probably somewhere around 1-2mbit/s depending on the frame size. Possibly copy the input video stream directly without re-encoding if the source video is also h264 and of a compatible framerate and bitrate.
* Encode audio in stereo aac format at a decent bitrate, probably somewhere around 192kbps. Again the source audio stream could be copied without re-encoding if it is of compatible format and bitrate.
* Maintain any embedded subtitle streams that were in the source file.
* Package the video into a relatively common container format such as .mp4
I'd be interested to hear ideas, feedback or suggestions from anyone familiar with video formats and encoding parameters etc. to make sure that we're doing something that's useful. -
This all sounds good but why put it in mp4 if your going to use these codecs there mostly mp4 and mkv why not mkv so basicly no more avi files. You guys claim this is becoming the new standard everywere, but its not its become the standard for mkv's and mp4's, but I don't care about that. Will this improve the way it looks on your player on veoh, I was at Vreel today and Youtube both of there players make yours look terrible, amv's and regular video's look 5 times better on there site's and there not using the new codecs. But there players are alot better also you can download from Vreel now. If this is all for downloads I think your wasting your time, the problem with most downloads is your system not the codecs alot of times the downloads screwup don't finish or put the audio off, I know I've downloaded my own files and gotten this problem and my origenal file dosen't have this problem. I'm all for the new codecs if it will help this problem but how can it help when its your download system, trust me I love quality so if you think this will help go for it but I just don't get it. I don't understand how this helps downloads, I understand it improves quality but your peer to peer system needs some reworking because were not really getting the origenal file like you claim, like I said it works similar to a torrent and is subject to getting the files corupted. If I'm wrong please tell me I am and explain how your downloads work. -
Inappropriate?BTW I thought you might like to know Vreel has beat you to this there converting all files to mkv's and using 1 audio and video codec it seems to be working well for them but they are having a few problems just thought you might like this info since your thinking about doing this yourself. You might want to check out. To help yourselves out.
I’m Hopeful this will help you out

Inappropriate?Personally, I change everything to DivX so it plays on my DVD player. My suggestion is that (at least for awhile) you provide the H.264 file with the option to download the original too. Last spring Veoh made a major change and it pissed off many users who left forever. It would be better to provide both options and then see what feedback you get, before going to H.264 only.
