Verizon Blocking Text Messages from Short Code services
So, about a month ago I got a new Verizon Voyager LG phone, a sweet unlimited text messaging (picture and video too!) plan and the interest in using it in all the ways text messaging can be utilized.
I setup facebook mobile and tested out google search right away. They both worked great. Then, I moved on to the most talked about sms related site out there, twitter. Twitter’s whole point is to say what’s happening in 160 characters or less (the limitation of a sms text message). Well, I was able to set up twitter, and I can now update from my phone, BUT verizon seems to be blocking incoming messages from the friends I follow on twitter, rending the whole service pretty much pointless for me.
I’ve continued investigating intresting applications to utilize their text messaging services and have continued to run into problems. Jaiku, similar to Twitter, which was actually bought by Google also does not work on my phone. Neither does any texting with 41411 (textmarks.com). The list of blocked (by verizon) or limited sms services continues to grow. Most of them are short codes (sms numbers of 4-5 digits long)
And here’s the crazy thing about it. This isn’t blocked on all verizon phones. The other phones on our family plan, with the exact same plan set up does work with these other services. I’ve talked to Verizon customer service for hours now and they don’t seem to have a clue what’s going on, but when you look online hundreds of people are having a similar problem. I even had to get my phone swapped out the other day for an unrelated malfunction and that didn’t solve the problem.
So, my experience so far with Verizon is as follows:
1. You don’t get what you pay for (paying for texting, not receiving messages)
2. Customer Service is terrible and uninformed (this is clearly a know problem)
3. The company itself doesn’t even have a firm grasp on its own services.
We switched to Verizon because they apparently receive great reviews overall, but I’ve been terribly unimpressed so far. Anyone else out there share my frustration?

Inappropriate?Wow...Glad I searched around before changing my verizon phone to facilitate Twitter better...I'm already having a problem with verizon's inability to correct an electrical block on a phone line in my house for the past 6 months!
I'm having serious doubts about Verizon... with so many people out of work, I think ts time for a big company like verizon to spread the wealth and hire people who know what they are doing.
Blocks on basic services that transmit information to us... this is ridiculous!
I've already eliminated PALM from consideration in most of my family from North East to South West U.S. for the simple fact they left a whole population out in the cold (including myself )with expensive hardware they no longer supported and introduced the Palm Treo that you had to buy...
hope I don't have to get rid of Verizon's service... -T.E. Ayeashi -
Inappropriate?Actually it sounds like the issue is you have Premium SMS blocked. Premium SMS can be anything ranging from a joke-of-the-day, to searches through Google, updates via Twitter, a whole bunch of different services.
Twitter is sent to your phone via the universal Short Code service that all mobile carriers use, specifically via code 40404. Personally I am a heavy Twitter user on my VZW phone and have no issues whatsoever.
If you have Premium SMS (also called premium texting) blocked, then all short codes will be blocked, whether they are free or not.
You may have had the Block Premium SMS feature added to prevent the charging short code programs, but please keep in mind it also blocks the free short code programs. The important thing to remember is please, please, please read all info on the website/text message from a short code program if there are any charges that apply with a particular program.
I would recommend calling Care and seeing if Block PSMS is on your account. If you prefer, you can also check yourself on the website:
verizonwireless.com > My Services > My Plan > Additional Features
It would be listed as Block Premium SMS. -
Though I appreciate your help and your knowledge on the topic, I still went several months, talking to SEVERAL VZW employees with no resolution to the problem. And then suddenly one day it started working. No explanation, nothing.
So though it sounds like you might know what your talking about, I reported this problem 6 months ago, made phone calls, went into verizon stores, and never received a resolution to the problem. Thanks for your help, but it's a little late. -
I would be frustrated with that too... sorry I only just found this website! -
Inappropriate?ariahfine, lighten up dude! aerix88's answer is complete and apparently accurate. For my part, thanks to aerix88 for helping me identify the problem I've been having texting from text+ to various friends with Verizon Wireless.

Inappropriate?aerix88's solution does not apply to me, Premium texting is not blocked on my account.
The ironic thing is that I switched to a Verizon plan specifically for the purpose of having unlimited texting. Why do I want unlimited texting? Twitter, of course.

Add the "Block Premium SMS" feature to your account through My Verizon and then remove it a short time later. Should clear the issue up, if that fails hound tech support (800) 922-0204 Option 3 -
It actually spontaneously started working on it's own about a week after I posted that. Thank you for your reply though, and I hope it helps someone else.
