So What?
Umm - so, how do I use this? Just enter an e-mail in the openid slot?

Inappropriate? So you're thinking from the perspective of a consumer - think for a moment from an RP (relying party) site.
Instead of asking for an OpenID, which is confusing to most users (enter in a URL? WTF?) the RP can ask for an email address. The user ends up using an OpenID, knowingly or not, and the RP only has to support OpenID.
OpenID is like SMTP, we feel - we didn't get SMTP, we got email. We're trying to promote OpenID adoption and use while solving some of the problems with OpenID (namely, adoption problems). -
Inappropriate? So, what I hear you saying is that currently, there aren't (any?) many RPs using this, but they will?
Tho I'm not a real geek - just a wannabe, I see that several in the twittersphere are excited about this. The "So What?" was just to "get attention" - but seriously, a little explanation of who currently uses this or when we can expect greater coverage would be great.
I am a big fan of openid and all for further promotion into the "real world" of everyday users.
Keep up the good work Michael!
I’m excited

I think a simple way to answer the "so what?" is that a web-friendly identifier need not ONLY be a URL... but something that can be provided a in human-familiar form and translated into a machine-friendly URL. We're trying to map email addresses to URIs with EAUT/Emailtoid, and insomuch as that addresses a huge complaint about OpenID currently, we feel like that's what's "so what"! ;) -
Inappropriate? At the moment there are no RPs using this service except for emailtoid itself (it's a consumer of itself!) and http://erp.gobyairship.com - though we hope to announce some more RPs soon, and, as always, we're extremely happy to work with anybody who wishes to support this service.
However, it should be noted, again, that we are a FALLBACK service. We hope to go away eventually! We hope that every top level email provider (gmail.com, yahoo.com, etc.) will support their own email-to-url mapping service - until that time, however, we're there so people can start asking for email addresses rather than OpenIDs (but still just use OpenID in the process).
