Creator & developer wish-list
(re-posting something we blogged about a while back)
We’re in the midst of planning how to involve a wider community of creators to participate on the Vivaty platform. Just think: your own interactive lamp, a floor to ceiling fish tank, your own line of hot tubs... We personally can’t wait for people like Carmen, one of our beta testers, to create stuff in Vivaty. We know there are many “voices” out there and many who will experiment in ways we can’t even imagine yet.
If you’re a creator, developer, or frankly anyone with an opinion, we’d love to hear what you’d want most from a new platform that’s browser-based. Create, create WHAT?, participate, participate HOW?, all of the above?

Inappropriate?once we have a way for creators to get more involved, the short answer about VRML is YES!
I’m also excited
-
Inappropriate?hey bruce - totally, yes. agree. stay tuned for phase 1 of our creator program very soon.
I’m artsy but not so artsy

Inappropriate?Hi Heidi,
Can't say that "lamps, fish tanks, or hot tubs" mean much to me.
but... if you want things you can't do in secondlife, musical concerts that mix a stage show with being inside an MTV video, online courses taught in a radically different way, and the ability to share pictures, video, maps, websites, etc with people around you through a more powerful method, well, just keep that promise on uploading content and using our own avatars.
As for me, I'll likely start with immersive poetry readings. Simple stuff, but the interactions and design principles that arise have other applications. (and heck, proof of this is a demo away - if you have a machine in a corner running BS Contact)
Lastly, and despite my pro-freedom attitude, I hope you work out the security and vulgar content issues. I still remember the naked porno avatars that hit The Palace, when the teen market grew larger than original folks.
Unsure if anyone at your place has explored:
http://habitatchronicles.com / http://www.fudco.com
(they seem down for now, but when up, there's some useful insights here)

PS Islands and plots of virtual land may work for some - but real development means the ability to make real changes. Hope you offer server space and/or worlds separate and completely customizable by the developer/owner. (Also hope that you offer some free of charge based on merit. Being an old timer and occasional visionary in VRML hasn't paid off like I planned. Still its not charity, with a truckload of competition, finding and supporting work that might help you stand out, lead to innovations in your broader system, and bring others on board is needed for your success. Systems that offer such control now are too costly for independent developers and that makes innovation problematic. Given that "lamps, fish tanks, or hot tubs" are seen as creative, you can see why finding funding for radically innovative ideas is tough... -

Inappropriate?My growing wishlist:
-let me start adding my own custom built vivaty environments and objects
-let me have more than one space that I can link to other spaces
-give me more options for interactivity that I can configure mysel (ie. click something to trigger an animation, opening a web page, storing data in a mini database.)
-allow me to charge for entrance to my spaces if I wish, and take a cut for yourself!
-let me start working with avatar and clothing creation

Inappropriate?hi all, for those following this thread, Vivaty launched our Vivaty Create program a few weeks ago. this is a pilot program (meaning it's just the very beginning of us figuring out how to open the platform) but it comes with a contest to give a cash incentive to those who want to submit content.
Anyone exporting to COLLADA can get involved here- just export to COLLADA, open in Vivaty Studio (free download available here: http://www.vivaty.com/downloads/studio/), then save as an X3D file and email the content to us at vivatycreate@vivaty.com
As everyone probably knows, opening up a contest to non-US residents is a huge legal hurdle, but please don't let that stop you - by submitting content you're in early and your voice is heard on *how* we should build Vivaty into a platform for all types of creators - whether professional or hobbyist.
We're going to feature great content no matter where you're from. And if you really have the best stuff, we'll work something out to reward you.
Steveg brought up a good point - what are we really looking for? Maybe a hot tub or a fish tank doesn't inspire most... What we really want is more virtual scenes (the more creative the better) and objects. If you see the art direction we have so far in Vivaty Scenes on Facebook, we want stuff that looks *different*. People who think beyond what we have done... the more original the better.
You can read all about the submission requirements at developer.vivaty.com and we had some recent blog posts at blog.vivaty.com
Whystler adds more good thoughts to this thread. While we are not yet ready to auto-publish or launch a virtual economy on our platform... we want to know how you want to do this so we can plan ahead.
eager to hear more discussion from steveg, Whystler, Bruce, Donza and others as they start creating. Deadline for this first phase is 9/22.
thanks!
heidi
I’m eager to see new 3d content

Hi Heidi, I won't be touching Vivaty for a while. I teach game design in a virtual world which doubles as my doctoral dissertation and I have to (have to) finish my dissertation (hoped that Vivaty would be my platform, but you are focused elsewhere) My employer has tried and largely failed at doing a SecondLife project and is now regrouping and doing smaller stuff with it (hope that changes - I'm not on that team anymore, unsure I want to sign back on as last time my first task was to make interactive bathroom stall doors) Anyhow, if Vivaty is more open by the time I'm done, I'll certainly be onboard.
"we want to know how you want to do this so we can plan ahead" What I want is conflicted.
I want complete control over the space I build - period.
I also want to be part of a larger, consistent whole.
This leads me to notions of cities and spaces. Cities are like SecondLife, (Islands and all) your economy, tools, all work there. Spaces are like what OpenSL, and a dozen other packages are doing. Separate developer controlled areas, linked to - but not bound by your conventions. That's it in a nutshell. (more details available)
Its workable and frankly necessary - skimming the posts I see you already have people asking you to develop the ability to sit in chairs and swim in pools. That real-world behavior direction will grow and suck up the time and effort of your staff (heck even a virtual economy is a part of that development path) If you open up a part of your system, you'll get independent people to do that work for you and just maybe people doing the stuff you never thought of.
For now, my old ideas are in a paper "From GUI to Gallery", its old, but a reasonable start. (hmm I may do a gallery space - or a music project like John Kilma's old stuff or a better version Adam Nash's SL work (sry Adam) - "after my dissertation"). My dissertation project is coming along btw, just re-geared for a Packaging Design class. I'll show 2D materials, 3D models of packages with student designs as texture maps, then put the work on the shelves in a supermarket (sort of)...I bring these materials to the scene in through my teacher's avatar via its gestures. (It actually shapeshifts) Granted this may seem odd - but it works, so just disagreeing with me isn't an option. There's an angle for other interaction - between individuals, that ought not be hard to do and might fit your needs. A quickie demo is something I can work up ... but honestly I think you have your hands (and minds) full of other notions. -
Inappropriate? One thing I would very much like to do, is to preview the environments I am making in Vivaty. I notice there is an option to do this in the Vivaty Studio publish section, but when I click that option I get an error as if the page doesn't exist.
Is this a feature that is just not implemented yet, and if so, what do you think your timeline is for implementing the Vivaty Studio preview "in vivaty" function?
-Whystler -
Thanks for trying Vivaty Studio!
If you're having trouble previewing, you must first install the Vivaty Player. It is not included with the studio installer.
Please goto www.vivaty.com, and install the latest Vivaty Player. Clearly, we want to make it real easy to Preview your work in the Player, and the hot key is F5.
If this does not resolve the problem, please let us know. -
No resolution I'm afraid... I had installed the vivaty plugin through facebook. After your message, I went ahead and installed aim, and then also the vivaty plugin for that. I tried to launch the vivaty preview from the vivaty studio once again by using the menu item and also by trying the f5 hot key.
Both times I was given a webpage that said the standard: The program cannot display the webpage.. etc. This is the exact page you get when a website doesn't exist or if somehow you are connected to the internet.
Any other ideas? :)
-Whystler -
Further update: I found that at the bottom of the vivaty website, there was a link directly to the "vivaty player". I assumed that this was different from the facebook plugin I had been using, so I downloaded and installed it.
No luck ... I still get a non-page when trying to preview in vivaty from the Vivaty Studio.
So then I thought to uninstall everything, and reinstall it. I uninstalled the player and the studio, and reinstalled them. No luck again.
Just keeping you up to date :)
-Whystler -
Inappropriate?Whyst
Just curious but do you know if you are able to use the Vivaty Player to view 3D at all?
Heidi
Is there still a page somewhere that shows some 3D Vivaty Player object that could test if the player is working - like when you install Flash and the spinning thing is viewable. I thought there used to be a (Flux Player - sorry LOL) page like that? Whystler's problem may be some type of other software (Cortona, BitManagement?) that is blocking the player.
:~D -
Inappropriate?Yes Donza,
I can use Vivaty in my facebook account. I stuck together an avatar, chose a scene, played around with videos, moved some furniture. It's all very nifty.
But I still cannot get the Vivaty previewing to work in the Vivaty Studio.
-Whystler -
Inappropriate?another update:
When Donza mentioned there might be some kind of software blocking the player, I decided to uninstall Blaxxun. No luck again. Same thing happens.
-Whystler -
Inappropriate?Hey Whystler
Just catching up on this thread... been busy dealing with getting our Firefox version out (coming next week)!
It sounds like we should walk through what you are doing together to see if we can fix it. What's your email or IM?
Tony -
Inappropriate?Hi Tony,
Thanks for the interest! I'm not sure if I would be wise to put my email here in public. OH what the heck, here goes... [psych! removed after Tony emailed] -
Inappropriate?I've got BS contact loaded as my default IE plugin and Cortona as my default Firefox plugin and am still able to create and preview with Vivaty from Vivaty Studio. (hasn't been an issue for me - thankfully)
"error as if the page doesn't exist" - interesting - so "blackness" or no player?
I assume the player (folder) and studio (folder) are installed in the same generic vivaty (folder).
I'm using Vista, with an ATI graphic card. -
This is a good comparison. Thanks for helping steve!
I don't get "blackness". I get the sort of IE website that one gets when there is no website that fits the url. Try this url, and you'll see exactly what I get:
http://www.whyst.com/zx
After thinking about your situation compared to mine, I remember something else ...
I have used Flux Studio 2,0 for years. I have this installed on my computer concurrently with Vivaty Studio. I have both. Would Flux Studio 2.0 existance cause a problem with Vivaty Studio?
-Whystler -
Inappropriate?Flux Studio 2 is installed on my machine (shrug) - seems kinda weird that its opening IE - when preview in Vivaty is selected. (Blame IE?)
Are you also working off the web - using the publish to web option?
To be honest I rarely use Flux (or Vivaty) Studio, or those features.
(I use X3D Edit & 3DS Max) -
Inappropriate?hey whyst, how's IMVU 3D?
-
Inappropriate?hi whystler- i am posting this on behalf of Keith V, one of our co-founders... Also, as a side note, we launched Firefox 3 support today so let me know if that helps.
(from Keith V)
That is very surprising. I have never seen that behavior before.
Can you please send a screen shot of the window that shows the error? (help@vivaty.com)
As a workaround, you can do a File / Export X3d, then find the x3d file on your drive, and drag and drop it into an open Internet Explorer window.
Also, you might try uninstalling, then reinstalling both Vivaty Player and Vivaty Studio.
Please send the screen shot, as I would like to understand the problem.
Thanks!
Keith Victor
I’m itchin' to solve this one
-
Inappropriate? Is there a way that Vivaty could be set up so that you don't automatically junp into your own scene when you go to Vivaty? It takes a while to load and then if you want to go to the Social Scenes you have to wait before you can switch. It would be nice to have an entrance page where you could decide where to go first before it started loading a scene.
-
Inappropriate?hi donza, yes, we agree. in a couple of weeks we'll have bookmark-able urls that go straight to the social scenes page in facebook. we're also launching something soon that gives you more guidance/context as to where you go -so it doesn't assume you want a personal scene first. thanks for the idea, we agree!
I’m excited for more new features
-
Inappropriate? Can't run Vivaty player on my Windows 2000 machine, even though Vivaty Studio works on it. So I guess this means you have no plans for a Macintosh or Linux version?
I’m frustrated that there's still not a universal solution for 3d content, though Google Earth is closer than most.
-
Inappropriate?hi mutatron, yes, right now Vivaty works on Windows XP/Vista and IE 6, 7 and Firefox 3. We are also considering a Mac port sometime in the future, though i can't say exactly when.
I’m hoping you can try vivaty w/ winxp or vista
-
Inappropriate?hi all,
I 've constructed an environment-room with furniture and images etc.. etc.. with vivaty studio and I don't know how to "place it out" on the Web & in Facebook to be My Scene.
If anyone knows how to do this, please let me know
thank you

Inappropriate?hi costas, thanks for creating something! we don't (yet) have auto upload so right now you can email it to us as an x3d file at vivatycreate@vivaty.com and we'll take a look. we're going to put the best stuff into Vivaty Scenes on Facebook and AIM after we get all our submissions after 9/22 or so. thanks!
I’m happy people are creating with vivaty studio

Hi Heidi, Just a quick question with regards to content submission. I'm only just getting around to putting some stuff together today (which won't be finished for your 22/9 deadline). I'm in the UK anyway so not eligible for the competition (not fussed about that) but my question is will you still look through content and consider it if its sent to you after the end of the competition? Thanks! -
Hi Chris! so exciting that your stuff is on its way. we will still be taking content submissions and showcasing stuff after 9/22, so please send it, we'd love to see it. thanks so much! let us know if you have any questions. -
Inappropriate?Just a couple of thoughts - could you please make the occupied scenes (esp public scenes) automatically sort to the front of the list on the first page? Right now you sometimes need to scroll through several pages of scenes to find one that has someone in it. If the occupied ones showed up first it would be much easier to find people online.
And also the thumbnails could easily be a whole lot smaller which would allow more scenes per page to be listed. Right now there are 12 pages with only 4 scenes per page - which takes WAY too long to look thru even with a fast computer.
:~D -
Inappropriate?LOL ok I see the occupied scenes do rise to the top (not sure why I found someone listed on a page further back), Still would like to have the thumbnails smaller (1/4 the size or even smaller) so more scenes per page would show. I think at least 12 per page (even 25) would still be effective.
:~D -
Inappropriate?thanks donza, we have a new version of the Launchpad coming 9/29... better organized, more stuff, etc. this is something we'll be continually refining... agree it would be nice to guide people into populated scenes and have more thumbnails per page. thanks!
