Jetta (2002) major transmission issues - anyone else?
I purchased a 2002 VW Jetta Wagon, 1.8L turbo model, with automatic / tiptronic transmission.
This month, at 75,500 miles, the transmission began to jolt on shifting between gears. The dealer and several trusted mechanics have quoted me between $3,000 and $5,000 for the necessary replacement or rebuild.
It was just out of of its original warranty (on miles, at 52K) when I purchased it, and I got an additional 2-year / 24,000-mile VW certified warranty when I bought it. When the problem occurred, I was out of the warranty by 3 months on time (though within the mileage range of 50,000 original + 24,000 certified miles, for what that's worth).
I went through a complaint process with VWOA, who dismissed my claim and declined to assist me on the cost of repair.
Is there anyone else who finds it unsatisfactory for a well-maintained modern car to have its transmission fail in 75K miles?
Has anyone else had this problem? If so, please write in, as it will help all of us if others come forward with this issue.

Inappropriate?I've got the 2005 Jetta (the newer 2005) with auto/tiptronic transmission but so far no problems. Have you heard of other 2002s having issues with this?
Bummer that VW won't help you out with it. Isn't it always the case that big things go wrong right after warranties expire? So frustrating.
I’m bummed for you & your car

Inappropriate?I have heard of other owners of this year with the same problems. Here's a little piece I wrote about my overall impressions of Volkswagen of America.

Inappropriate?Great blog post, Greg. As i was reading what you wrote about the cease & desist letters VW is sending out it crossed my mind that we may need to be prepared to receive one. Thankfully, I just attended the EFF Bootcamp last week so feel fairly well prepared to deal with that should the time come. And even better, one of EFF's attorneys is invested in Satisfaction.
Your blog post certainly causes me to reconsider owning a VW once we're done with our current Jetta.
I’m sad when a company I want to like makes me not like them

Inappropriate? That would be ironic - and interesting! I'd sure like to think talking about this brand in the way we are constitutes fair use, but I'm glad you have EFF on your side if vw tries to make an issue of it.

Inappropriate? We have a 2002 Jetta GLX that my wife drives with only 35,000 miles and have had problems with the tranny shifting hard between 1st and 2nd. We have mentioned it to the dealer a number of times when it has been in for service. Both before and after warrenty. the reason I would take it back to the dealer was to have it documented in case we had any further problems. They said that they checked the codes and nothing shows up but have reset tranny settings only to have it do it again after a while. Sounds like even thought it has been mention every time we had service they are not going to stand behind it. We are thinking of trading it in to a relative that sells cars but don't want to give him problems either. He has a small dealership and prides himself on the vehicles he sells. It has not been a big problem as of yet but we don't want it to be for the next person either. After doing this research now we will not buy another new VW. My wife also has a '77 bug convertable and I wish she could drive that year round.....At least I can work on it ! Well good luck Greg as we hope to trade ours off in the next day or 2 if our relative thinks he can unload it somewhere ! Oh yeah ! We Love the Jetta and that is really the only problem we have had with it other than the recalls and winter driving which Bridgestone Blizzak tires relly really help with.

Inappropriate?I am having the same issue with my 2002 VW Jetta Wagon!!! The transmission went out at 90K miles. I was quoted $4K by the local VW dealership for the transmission repair. This car has had numerous issues but the expensive transmission repair is the last straw.
I’m Disappointed in VW

Inappropriate?I too have a 2002 Jetta TDI with auto transmission and it went out at 115,000 miles with a repair bill of $5,000!

Inappropriate?I just came back from a mechanic who confirmed that the problems I've been having with reversing on my 2002 Jetta GLS are caused by a problem transmission. Apparently, VW used to have a 10 yr, 100000 mile warranty on powertrain but reduced the warranty after they had to keep replacing transmissions. My car only has 46000 miles on it !!

Inappropriate?Wow. Good to know. And have to say, that's pretty lame of VW.

Inappropriate? Also 2002 Jetta 1.8t wagon, been having issues after first starting car won't shift out of third until I stop the car and restart. 115K miles, also was quoted 5K for total replacement. Glad I didn't waste my time with VWOA.
