Suggestion and help
Hello,
for my thesis i wanna make a study to test the nonverbal-communication in virtual environments...your software is great to realize this project a lot cheaper and comfortable (some tracking-hardware are much complicated in using)
but unfortunately I've following problems:
1. the calibration is sometimes not working..i have to try it a lot of times until it works..I don't know the problem..
2. also the tracking is not working..maybe because of problem 1...
3. may you send me your gpl-version of your source-code..i could already try to figure out the problem...
4. furthermore it will be great to select a camera...(Idea: until now I've tested your software with my integrated camera...maybe the camera-quality causes problems..so I want to test it with an external camera)

As you can see, the project is in state of "stand by" since one or two month now so it is possible the answers won't be exhaustive.
As far as I remember, calibration was made to reduce the impact of light exposure during face tracking. The problem which can occur is that the lightening condition are so bad that even the calibration doesn't work.
In fact, the calibration process performs a number N of loops until it reachs an expected number of success or (and there is probably your problem) it reachs an (un)expected number of failure, to avoid infinite loops.
For now, we where mostly working with light dependant tracking methods. We are currently looking for a tracking system based on haartraining exclusively. But we have to check first the time cost, the efficiency and other parameters.
Concerning the source code, I am not able to answer you know if it is possible to give it to you. I think it is, but with all those secret and military stuffs you never know (joke inside ;) ).
So while you are waiting for that you can at least google things like "opencv" or "haartraining".

thank you for your quick answer and tipps, i appreciate it. Yes, you are right with the light definitions, other cams work well, but as i do work on a notebook with built-in webcam i cannot choose between them in your add-on. May you send me the source code now, so i can add an option for this one, and even fix some bugs?
Note for your legal terms: According to the second life page the client is released under the terms of gpl, which means any release and of course modification must release the source code as well. Any binary-only release violates these terms, and makes you accountable.

Inappropriate?Hey Ace22, we are currently getting ready for a complete publication of the source code, only going through the hassle of getting everything online properly with an acceptable level of quality - check our blog both mac and PC version shoudl be available within the next 2 weeks (probably through a dedicated SF page)

actually I have seen your Headtracker Videos. All of them are amazing. I've installed the current version and test it. The calibration works perfect but my avatar doesnt move. Did you know what causes this problem?
In the following i'm looking forward to seeing your source code. Can you tell me, whenn and where I can get it?

As for source code I'm going through a headache right now... full source mac +win is 4GB !!! (including all the libraries dependencies required by SL...) so I think i'll have to try and make a patch out of it before uploading it to the google code repository ...
if you have an idea to sort this out I'm buying ;)

the avatar is able to make the common SL movements, but your engine does not really work. I tried different lighting conditions in my room and in most cases the calibration succeeds. The problem is that when I move my real live head the avatar does not react.

Maybe you should extract each file you changed for this project and put them into an archive with the original directory structure.
.. but all in all patch sounds good :)

thank you for the windows patch, but in its current form it is more or less useless as it fails on a bunch of files. Can you please recreate the patch and EXCLUDE the .svn directories and as well the object files? This will make the patch a lot smaller and easier to handle!
