What is the problem with self service check outs?
Walmart has several self serve check out cash registers at the local store which are never operational when I visit their store (Mondays & Fridays early morning to avoid the crowd). I am a retired senior and usually do not purchase many items at a time and there is no fast service check out line, meaning I often have to wait in long lines to pay for only a few items. On the several occasions that I have queried the greeter the explanation offered is that a dedicated employee is required to monitor the self service check out registers and that management does not want to pay for the cost of this. Why would any retailer install this technology in the first place and then not make it available for the use of their clients?

Inappropriate? There are several reasons that self-checkout machines are often non-operational.
- They break down often. The mechanisms that make change, process credit card payments, and weigh merchandise often fail and require repair. Many employees are not able to fix these problems themselves, requiring management or other personnel to get involved.
- Many customers are dishonest when using self checkouts - they find ways to avoid scanning items, and avoid paying for them. If the employee working the self-checkouts is busy helping customers and fixing the machines, they cannot monitor these dishonest customers.
- Many customers are unable to use the self-checkout machines correctly, and they generate many complaints to management.
I'm not saying it's right, but in my experience these are the reasons that self checkouts are often closed. I don't work for WalMart personally, but I've been in the retail business for several years, and have a good understanding of how these machines work. As the technology progresses, hopefully the machines will be upgraded so that they can be easier to use and more available. -

Inappropriate? They've removed the self check outs from most of the stores in our area.
Give it a few more years, they will have converted everything from UPC to RFID and checkout will be as easy as walking your full cart out the door and to your car.
