No more WaMu
I moved to Washington DC and there are no Washington Mutual branches there. I tried to cancel my account after they charged me three times for a $4 overdraft. They said I needed to cancel it in person. I asked if they could cancel it over the phone or if I could do it over the internet. They said no. I asked if they could e-mail me the information so I could cancel it. They said my only option was to send them a letter. I plan to send them a check with my new bank along with my cancellation letter. No wonder the company is imploding.

Inappropriate? You were told wrong. Even if there are no branches near you, you can still make transactions with your WaMu accounts (deposits, withdrawals, check and card orders, et.al.). If you wish to close your account, all you need to do is make a withdrawal (you can write a check (which will zero out your WaMu balance) to yourself (or transfer funds) and have it deposited onto your new (different) bank account)) or request by mail. I'm sure their customer service would provide you with their bank by mail transactions address. Request for account closeout, even if you still have remaining balance, if there's no way you can zero it out, they would just send a check to you.
