Is there any way to make the category boxes wider for a closed card sort?
Is there any way to make the category boxes wider for a closed card sort? Respondents are having trouble using the software because they can't read the full label unless they hoover over the category box. Also, when they are dragging the cards into the category the hoover text doesn't come up at all.

We have a test version posted that should be fairly stable. When you get a chance, please try it out. Note that it is tied to the same database, so results will show up just as if they came from the regular version.
All you need to do is replace the "/s/" in your study URLs with a "/ss/." For example, http://websort.net/ss/79AE41/
We're planning on pushing this up to the main version by the beginning of next week, and would appreciate any feedback or bug reports you have.

Inappropriate? We just had a similar request from another customer this morning! The problem is, they will always be too short for some labels, no matter how wide we make them. The only other option is to let the labels wrap down to a 2nd (and 3rd, and 4th) line. Would that be preferable?
-
Inappropriate?Well, the real problem is that since you don't accommodate for sub-categories we're using them in our labels. (i.e. [Main Category]:[Sub category] or Human Resources:Sexual Harassment Training). Our labels wouldn't need to be so long if sub-categories were possible. Is this possible to add to the system? If not, then the boxes need to accommodate at least 25 more characters.
-
Inappropriate? The sub-categories issue has without a doubt been our longest-running one. The biggest problem is analysis: it can be difficult enough to make sense of a single-level sort. We always respond back and ask people how they plan to analyze the data from a multi-level sort, but nobody has ever bothered to get back to us. We'd love to provide the means to help people analyze multi-level sorting, but from our perspective things get really messy really fast.
And so that's our standing offer. Please let us know if you have some insights you'd like to share.
All that being said, we do have some very interesting stuff on the horizon that involves an entirely different method of card sorting, and will support multi-level sorting. But that won't be released until sometime in '09. -
Inappropriate?I'll definitely get back to you on the analysis of the multi-level sorting (there is a work around), but I'm still curious to know why it's a big deal to increase the boxes by 25 chars? There is more than enough space in the interface to accommodate wider boxes. Or, possibly make them adjustable by he user... let them adjust the width by clicking and dragging a corner.
-
Inappropriate? It's not that it's a big deal. The fact that a couple people have requested this already means that we'll probably make them wider in the next revision (due out next week). My point was just that, based on past experience, it will never be wide enough- there will always be somebody with labels that are just a few characters too long. That's why I asked about the alternative of line-wrapping.
Thanks for the continued feedback- we'll look forward to the multi-level insights! -
Inappropriate? It would be fantastic if the category boxes were widened next week. My one one client is not comfortable using this tool since the boxes cut the labels off. They would definitely use it if this new feature is in the new release. Thanks Jed!
-
Kyle- just wanted to follow-up with you on the timing of this feature. We've decided to fix several other usability issues with the categories while we're at it, and that has pushed the release out to next week. If this causes you serious problems, please contact us and we'll see about just getting the wider labels in there sooner. -
Inappropriate?Hi Jed,
I finally have time to revisit your inquiry about multi-level analysis. I look at the problem a little differently... To me, the analysis for a multi-level closed card sort is the same as if it were just 1 level because we've already decided that the sub-categories are connected to the main categories. So, really all we need in an online card sorting tool is a "wrapper" around our sub-categories showing the relationship to the main category. Mind canvas does this with their Tree Sort tool. They also allow for 3 hierarchical levels with their OpenSort tool.
Best,
Kyle -
Inappropriate?I forgot to add that in a previous post yesterday you asked if wrapping the label would be preferable and I wanted to let you know that I think that would be great. Anything that would let us see the entire label would make us more comfortable in using the tool.
-
Inappropriate?Kyle, we are very intrigued by the "'wrapper' around our sub-categories" comment. Would you possibly be able to describe the analysis for your previous multi-level sorts in more detail? Or provide a screenshot?
And thanks for the feedback about the word wrap - that is definitely useful for us to know! -
Inappropriate?Sure. I have testing today and tomorrow so I'll try and post back on Monday.
-
Inappropriate?Jed, that's great news! My client will definitely appreciate this. Thank you so much for making this enhancement.
I’m thankful

Inappropriate?Hi Sarah and Jed,
Here is an image depicting how I was envisioning the wrapper. I think it may be a good way to let the user know the hierarchy of different categories. This way you could test a closed card sort with a few different sub-categories in one main category.
I noticed that the new version of Web Sort with the wider category boxes hasn't been released yet. Do you know when I can expect the new release?
Best,
Kyle

Inappropriate? Many thanks for the image. If we get multi-level sorting out there, I definitely think that is how we would structure the participant side of things. It looks clean and intuitive. The real problems we run into are on the study manager sides of things - how do we show the results of the sorts and the data from all participants so that sense can be made of it? Any input in this regards would be most welcome!
As far as the wider categories, we combined this update with a few other tweaks, and plan to have it uploaded and publicly available on Monday. Sorry for the delay, but it is coming! :) -
Inappropriate?Still doing some final internal testing and tweaks, but here's a quick 2-minute screencast to show where we're at. Feedback appreciated!

Inappropriate?Wow! That's really excellent. The long label problem is totally solved with the word wrapping. Thank you so much for taking the time to do the screencast. Looking forward to showing this to my client when it's live.
Thanks! -
Inappropriate?Jed,
I have a meeting with my client tomorrow to decide whether or not we're going to use Web Sort. They need a firm date on when the new release will be live. Is this something you can give me? If not, it's ok. I prefer to tell them you don't know rather than tell them a date and have it not be ready.
Thanks,
Kyle -
