the 'friend' feature of cucku is actually much weaker than what wuala is offering because with wuala it is everywhere and anywhere with encryption but with cucku it is only in one other location - the only thing you need to do is to wrap the basic functionality of wuala into a full backup software

Just use _any_ backup software and tell it to store the files on your network drive... doesn't that sound better?

I higly recommend, no, I urge the Wuala team to take a moment to sit back and think what the focus of their software is/should be.
Currently Wuala has lots of potential to be a great applicatiion - but I'm not sure if it is good to play in the backup, collaboration and community/sharing fields all at the same time.
For example, backup is possible, but not as "set and forget" (see Dropbox) or without additional software. Collaboration is possible as mentioned by Andreas in the other post but it is not for easy daily use.

hmm. A good point of view, joe. On the other hand - wuala is a company of LaCie now. So a focus on easy backup support should be an important task to integrate wuala into the portfolio of Lacie.
