Downloads
Every so often, people ask where the downloads are. They remain at their original location and you need to navigate there. The downloads window helps you find them. Also, you can add the file to your favorites so that you find them again.
However, it doesn't solve the problem of accessing the files via the network drive, especially if it is a file from the world area (where is it??). There's no central place for downloads yet. What about the following idea?
- We introduce a new special folder "Downloads" under your files. A central place for all downloads.
- You can open it in Wuala or via the network drive W:/USERNAME/Downloads
- Only explicit downloads appear there. Files that you open directly (double click, e.g. in the world are) won't.
- You can keep the files forever, or delete them to free up HD space, as you like
- The download window remains, to show progress, speed and such. If you clear the list there, it does what it says, not more, meaning that the list is empty but the files remain in your downloads folder.
The concept is very similar to a browser download (downloads window, file on desktop). Also, you can execute files directly in the browser (open) or download them explicitly, also similar. Favorites would be a bit obsolete - we could introduce a 5-star rating later.
Tell us what you think. Have a nice weekend!

Inappropriate?sound good, but i think for some people a button/window to delete those files directly out of wuala will be needed (in beta, rc)..
I knew some people who are really afraid when they need to open a file window and find a specific file or folder on their system. And then deleting! Whow! :D
(ok - these are usually no alpha-users, but in the end, think alway about the worst case user who can happen).
I’m kidding
-
Inappropriate?yes, you could delete files directly in the download folder in wuala

Inappropriate?
Inappropriate? What would happen if I download (Ctrl+D) File1.bla and then manually go to C:\Program Files\Wuala\Data\Temp and delete everything in there or manually add a file unknown to Wuala? Wuala crashes? Wuala tries to redownload the file? Wuala displays anything in \\Wua\La\Myusername\Downloads that is in that folder?
What happens if I set my local Cache size to 2 GB but decide to download a Linux-DvD that has 4,7 GB? And what happens to the files that are already in the Cache?
Maybe you also decide to create a new ...\Wuala\Data\Downloads folder but I still hope you plan this well - at least better than the update mechanism in groups at the moment!
I’m confident

Inappropriate?Wuala wouldn't display anything from the cache directory. Files in the cache directory are encrypted, it's an internal representation. The two places to access your files would either be through the downloads folder in Wuala, or through the network drive.
Also, the caching could become implicit, similar to when you download sth. with BitTorrent. You might still be able to limit the cache so that it deletes old files automatically, but I myself would like to take control of it myself, that is deleting when I feel the need to. If you download a file too large to fit the cache, it'd ask to increase the cache, as it already does now.
But my most important question to you: What doesn't work with the groups at the moment! Please let me know, wasn't sure what you mean with the updating mechanism... -
Inappropriate?Ah, alright then:
(little offtopic though, I thought I'd better submit this bug later, when Filesystem Integration works 100%)
- close Wuala
- start Wuala
- go to "My Groups" Tab
- open a (rather large, 200+ members) private Group via double click (I have enabled comments an Folder view, if that matters...)
Voila! It switches to the contents of that group but then suddenly after a split-second I'm back in "My Groups"
- re-open the same group, everything's fine now... until... you click on the picture of a member of that group! *bang* Back to the overview!
- re-open that group _again_! This time try to access a folder 2 or three folders deep via tree view... Again, back to the "My Groups" root folder!
Ma guess is that Wuala tries to index/cache everything in that folders but doesn't remember "where" I've been so it sends me back to the root folder.
Maybe provide a "cache all" button so one can easily access all private folders that are available via Filesystem Integration, right now you have to open a group several times to make sure you have all data about it in the cache. -
Inappropriate?I like the idea and I have some more suggestions on download subject if you check my suggestion.
I’m excited
-
Inappropriate? After using Wuala for one day I was wishing there was a Download folder under My Files. And if you delete a file from this folder it should delete it off your hard drive.
I’m thankful

Inappropriate? So will there be a download folder in the beta?
