how much control does an admin have over the files members of the group uploaded?
I couldn't find much information about groups. If I am the admin and allowed members, after they upload, can I delete these links if they do not match the group's content or theme?
can they dirty up the group, if I am not online for a few days? can I permit a few members to be like operators and keep the group with the right content? can I ban a member? can I ban him for only a day or a few hours?
will I be notified of changes to the group I created?
thank you for any of these answers

Basically, you can do all the features you mentioned already. However, they are somewhat hidden and not well tested. :) There are three roles a user can have in a group: member, moderator and administrator. By default, the founder of a group is its administrator and new members start as members. Members can post links to groups and delete them again. Moderators can also create new folders, move stuff around and delete links even if they were posted by other members. Administrators can define the roles of other members (just select a member in a group and click on 'Set Role' in the details pane), invite new members or throw them out again.
One of the most frustrating things about groups at the moment is that they can only contain links to files, but not files themselves. Changing this could make groups more interesting and flexible (also for write access in future), however, we don't know yet who should pay for the storage used by a group and how we could implement this such that it is easily understandable. Ideas?

Inappropriate?Well groups still have many "random features" (like jumping back and forth in "explorer mode") and even in the client it states, that you should look forward since groups are the least developed feature (well, it's an Alpha!).
All of the features you mentioned would be highly appreciated but I'm afraid we'll have to wait some time till that gets high on the priority list (btw. what's on there atm.?) -
Inappropriate?Thank you. I was hoping for a more formal answer from wuala employees, what is currently possible, what is anticipated to be added, etc.
and generally how the groups work.
right now, I only see the files are links from the actual users' data.
so I ask to provide more documentation about this feature.
btw, it would also be useful if I'd be able to limit content that is marked with a certain tag. for example 'sexual' content would not be allowed on my completely unrelated group :) (blacklist)
or only allow if the file has certain tags. (whitelist)
there is an organization called ICRA, they have different levels of rating for sexual content, and wuala could use this. (for groups and general family-friendliness)
I haven't seen or used it myself though -

Inappropriate?PS: Banning a member is currently not possible. You can only throw him out entirely. Maybe we could introduce "read-only" members that cannot post new files. This, of course, would only make sense for private groups as public groups can be read by anyone anyway.

Inappropriate?Another feature we have planned in relation to groups: when opening a group, there should be some kind of list of recent events ("Fritz has posted the following comment to x.jpg", "Joe has been promoted to moderator", etc.). What group features do you miss most?
-
Inappropriate?Thank you I understand now much better the options.
if someone is spamming my group, continuously adding unrelated files,
I can kick him out, and the problem would be gone as long as the group's state is that members are invited and it's not open to everyone.
if it's open to everyone the admin's rights are less significant. Or can the admin change the group's status at any time? that would be a good feature to have.
-read-only users in a private group is also very useful.
I don't understand why the links instead of files is a problem. the files are stored in one place and are used in the group's space.
However to be able to donate a part of your storage to a group would be useful, in the case that another member doesn't have enough free space, and he wants to upload to our group.
It would be nice if a fixed percentage of my storage is automatically split to all my groups (say 20% split to 4 groups..)
however, you'd probably need to give more than 1GB as a start ;-)
this is the age of videos after all :) -
Inappropriate?Links + hosting files in a group:
Maybe charge each member of a group the same amount of data?
The links aren't that bad I guess, they are just a pain in the rear if you have for example a "Classical Music" Private Group:
Someone shares a folder named "Mozart"
Someone else just shares a "Music" folder, with 10 Subfolders "Mozart/Beethoven..."
Somone else links every file seperately
Someone else links a folder named "M" with a subfolder "Mozart"
...
Maybe let Admins/Moderators have more control how data can be organized, like another idea here, with Group/User websites inside Wuala with a simple language (maybe some kind of XML/BB-Code?):
A possible example:
*****************************************************************************
[title]The classical Heaven![/title]
[picture=wua.la/classicaladmin/grouppictures/logo.jpg][/picture]
Welcome to our classical music community!
Please vote for your favourite song/artist to get them up in our toplist
[folder]Mozart[/folder]
[content]
[link=wua.la/Mozartlover/Music/Mozart/File 1.moz]Mozart rocks.moz[/link]
[link=wua.la/Mozartlover/Music/Mozart/File 2.moz]Mozart rocks even more.moz[/link]
.
.
[/content]
[folder]Beethoven[/folder]
[content]
[folder]Symphonies[/folder]
[content]
[file=wua.la/...]....[/file]
[/content]
[folder]Pictures[/folder]
[content]
.
.
.
[/content]
[/content]
*****************************************************************************
It could be also possible to add tags etc. that way and maybe a dynamically generated toplist, based on votings/views (like on Youtube)
Group features I miss:
# Adding your files to folders more than 1 level deep is not supported
(it's not possible to link the file "eg.gs" to the folder "Spam/Spam/Spam" in a group, only to "Spam/Spam")
# Allow only files that have been marked by an moderator, so you can for example keep some "funny" guy that posts p0rn all over your group folders from doing so
# don't show comments in the "title" of a private group, even if it is listed as public viewable -
Inappropriate?Alright another Idea:
Moderated Group (Public/Private):
Anyone who is allowed to add files to that group (User, Moderator, Admin, NOT "Silent User") can share folders, just like now - BUT only moderators and Admins can create links to that files.
A a helping tool, they get something like a moderator panel where they can see wich files were accepted/rejected already by other moderators or which files have been recently shared by a member.
Let's say Joe_User shares his "Music" Folder with the "Classical Music" Group and links it there...
- the classical music fans don't like to see his Black Metal Albums at all
- there already is a "Music" folder in the classical music group
- there isn't even all music in that folder, Joe_User semms to simply add all his media files to that folder
Now a Moderator sees in his panel "new Share: Joe_User Folder: Music"
He can now go to that folder, and everytime he selects a file or folder, he can click "accept" or "decline" - if he accepts, he can choose where to link the file via the "Zu Gruppe Hinzufüright click menu (Btw. please allow subsubfolders, subsubsubfolders etc. in that menu!).
Members of the group could go to Joe's Page and access the Metal Albums manually, if they want to, but the don't get added automatically!

Inappropriate?good idea, but the implementation can be different. (doesn't have to use right clicks-popup menus, but I like the panel idea where notifications and a list of files is waiting to be accepted or declined. along with previous recommendations of other moderators - sounds like a good way to get this work done)
:-) -
Inappropriate?Yeah, it's just a possibility - sometimes you just have to protect the users from themselves.
Ah, and as already mentioned many times: Message boards or at least personal messages. (Take a look at Office Groove 2007 for example, there is a free trial that is long enough to play a little with it!)
