I'm still confused about file maintenance
I started this just to clear a few things out. I like to control the size of my Wuala folder and the amount of traffic that Wuala generates but currently I don't understand any of them.
I'm a bit confused about what happens when I drag a file into wuala. This is what I think that happens:
- the file is copied into cache
- the file is uploaded
- the file can be removed from the cache if I click the 'clear cache' button
Wuala also remembers the file location and modification date, so if I want to access a file that isn't in cache but it's still at its original location, I don't need to re-download it.
So, I have a few of questions. First: who maintains my files? I thought that the files were maintained by the Wuala server but the 'Show Maintenance' button in the uploads window still shows some files that are maintained by me.
Second, how can I maintain files if I have no local backup of them? Are they only maintained if I have them in cache?
Third, why does my Wuala folder have 300 MB if I just cleared the cache?
And finally, is that anonymous maintenance stuff coming or what? :)
Thanks

Inappropriate?I just found out that on each file's properties I can see the state of the file (online/local/uploading/downloading). And next to the file size I see a 'Clear cache' button. I suppose this deletes the local copy of the file right?
However, I have some 'Local' files where the 'Clear Cache' button is disabled:

Is this some kind of bug?Maybe that's why my wuala folder takes a lot of space even after I clean the cache.
I’m confident

Inappropriate?maybe the clear cache button is only availiable if wuala can find the file on its original location? File maintenance seems to be an important part of the system and can only be done if the client keeps a copy of the original file.

Inappropriate? But I thought Local Backup was not obligatory anymore. If Wuala still has to keep a local copy of the file for maintenance I don't see how is this any different from Local Backup.
Over the past weeks my wuala folder kept growing and now it's ~4GB, even after I clear the cache. So, what should I do?
I’m undecided
-
there was a bug with clearing the cache. Should be resolved in the latest version. -
Inappropriate?Wuala cannot work without one local copy of the file as maintanence is an important part of the sytem. In earlier versions you where actually keeping 2 copies, because wuala did copy each file to its folder.
If you don't see a difference to local backup, just two hints for you: "Internet" and "Fire" ;-)
I’m kidding

Inappropriate?Maintenance isn't necessary any more for availability as there is a backup of every file on our servers. This backup is maintained automatically by our servers. The maintenance that is done by the client spreads the file into the P2P network, which helps with download speeds and reduces the load on our servers. We'll start to optimize maintenance as soon as the amounts of traffic on our servers gets painful. :)

Inappropriate?I finished uploading a few files last night, totalling about 100 MB. I was annoyed when my dodgy Internet connection then died during the 'maintenance' phase. When I reconnected and logged back into Wuala, the maintenance did not resume.
Is there a way that I can manually re-initiate this, to continue spreading the 100 MB across the P2P network? If not, how long must I wait before the next maintenance phase for these files will begin automatically?
I’m frustrated

Inappropriate? It should start another round of maintenance after 7 to 14 days. We've plans to optimize and change a few things with maintenance, but they aren't our top priority.

Inappropriate?Regarding that bug, I don't think it's fixed yet. My Local Cache size is 7GB. It says that I have 2.7GB used and when I click 'Clear cache', I still have 2.7GB used. Meanwhile, my wuala folder has 4.7GB (and I'm not uploading nor downloading anything).
But it's OK with me. Optimize it when you have the time. Since maintenance is not essential and it's used mainly to improve download speed I'll delete the wuala folder if it becomes really really big.
I’m happy
