Inappropriate?Well, as long as you are connected to the network one can find out your IP(s) - after that, I don't think they are of any use... Bootstrapping the DHT etc. can be done via the main server (which is hardcoded I guess) and besides, all they could save would be "User XXX has connected to the network with the IP 123.456.7.8" since private content is encrypted.
This is _not_ Rapidshare, you know... ;-)
Individual storage nodes however could very well log any connection to and from them, but since the content is encrypted they maybe know who accesses what but not what it is that they access.
I’m amused

Inappropriate?Hi, sorry for the delayed response. :) We actually keep a log of who has logged in when with what address. We do so to find out how many active users there are and to track down bugs in the Wuala network.

With username or without (or anonymized name)? Like "Bugreport logged in with IP 123.4.5.6 from ... to ..." or "User with Hash 123456789 logged in with IP 123.4.5.6 from ... to ..."? Hash or anonymous would be fine for me but Username + IP etc. can be used to track down users too... ":-/ I'm indifferent" -
Our database contains the IP address together with user numbers that can be mapped to their accounts. Generally, Wuala provides privacy, but only limited anonymity (there are no anonymous files for example). With that design principle in mind and given that ip addresses can help us (e.g. if a user creates dozens of accounts), we think logging this information is ok. (See our privacy policy for more details.) -
