java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space
For most image files, when I attempt to start download. I get an error dialog that says: "java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java head space". During the first 30 minutes or so I didn't have this problem.
They're all rather small files, being images. Restarting wuala doesn't help. increasing the limit for memory jvm can use from 256 to 512 makes no difference.
According to top (and gexmap) wuala is only using 77 megabytes of memory. There is also nearly 1GB of memory "free" so that can't be a problem either.
I'm running wuala alpha linux 65 on a debian testing system with java installed from sun-java6-jre package.
> java -version
java version "1.6.0"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0-b105)
Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 1.6.0-b105, mixed mode)
Update: The problem seems to occur on images, not on music or videos. Some images seem to work. I can't figure out a pattern though.

Inappropriate?I got this problem, too.

no more infos available, except it consumes alot of memory and cpu.

I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Right, I probably should've mentioned this seems to happen only with images from world tab. One of my friends, who I invited, also has the same problem. However, it looks like shared (not public) images work just fine. At least ones we have very recently uploaded. I'll do some testing on whether making them public changes things.
Update: I don't know if this is related but some image files I tried to upload don't seem to be uploading. They show up but can't be opened. -
Inappropriate?wuala crashed after click on right sidebar for "similar files". the heap space problem is not present this time. this is a full crash.
a crash report is in the "wuala alpha feedback group"
cheers

Inappropriate? Are you using the mac version? There is a known problem with related files that only happens on the mac version but we are not sure why or how it is caused. :(
-
Inappropriate?i'm getting the error on a vista version.

Inappropriate?I have this problem to, I ́m using Leopard on Mac, and this problem it ́s new for me,

Inappropriate?I restarted wuala with 12000 transactions pending. The next start it did an update and now gets an out of memory error whenever i start it. Upped to 1.5GB heap and didn't help.
I believe i could run it under java x64 and give it more run to try and recover it but i dont know the command line arguments to send to the java executable. My attempts resulted in unable to find classes and invalid alpha test password.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?wuala shouldn't load all transactions into ram if they won't all fit. Or set like only load 1000 into ram a any one time and say "1000+ pending transactions (Processing 123 per minute)".

Inappropriate? For me it still crashes since a few weeks.... with this error on startup...
(using Windows Vista 32bit)
On my notebook with Windows XP it works fine (cause i downloaded it much later .. after this problem occured)
I already tried to reinstall ... but this did not work.
I’m sad
-
Inappropriate?Since you reinstalled i'll say drastic measures are ok.
go to C:\Users\Public\AppData\Wuala\Data\Meta\ and delete the contents.
If that doesn't work delete the whole wuala folder in C:\Users\Public\AppData\
These instructions are vista specific.

Inappropriate? It didn ́t work at first after i tried this...
... i got an error that the dir was gone (maybe cause i renamed it *smile*).
but i installed wuala again (overwritten the old one) and then it worked.
Thanks for that suggestion.
I’m thankful

Inappropriate? The problem still exists in b162 on Linux Debian.
App uses ~19 mb ram, uploading a 1.4 gb file work (reading, encrypting) until the upload itsself starts. Then I get the "download" "java heap space" message. But it uses still the 19mb ram.
Do I need 1.4 gb of ram to be able to upload an 1.4 gb file? :-()
Edit:
I am working on a shell with 1 gb ram for my account (8 gb total).
-
Inappropriate?Do you have swap space?
-
Inappropriate?Unfortunately, no. Wuala runs on a virtual host with 256mb ram (secure) to 1024 mb ram (flex-system).
Dateisystem Größe Benut Verf Ben% Eingehängt auf
vzfs 40G 16G 24G 40% /
tmpfs 4,0G 0 4,0G 0% /lib/init/rw
tmpfs 4,0G 0 4,0G 0% /dev/shm -
Inappropriate?I'm going to lean to the system not having enough ram to handle a 1.4 GB file. Did you use FSI to upload it? or the GUI?
-
Inappropriate?I use the GUI. What is FSI?

Inappropriate? Is there a workaround, until this problem is fixed, which I could use? I tried to play with the parameters for java (like -Xmx and -Xms with all possible values) but it produced allways the same errormessage on upload.
I’m frustrated
-
Inappropriate?Well (Starts flipping through Wuala Design Manual In Head) It should store it in an upload directory as it encrypts it, so I wouldn't think it would run out of memory. How much room is given to the wuala Data Folder? 24GB Remaining? JVM is usually good about garbage collecting when hitting a memory limit. Unless there isn't enough memory to Garbage Collect :-/
Can you watch "top"/Other System Resource Monitor to watch memory usage while you upload that file? -
Inappropriate?Memory seemd to be stable during upload. Now (167) it uploadeds up to 15% and then stoped without any messages. Should I open a new bug for this behaviour? Now its version 167.
I’m feeling better about this problem
-
Inappropriate?Open a new bug.
