JEW - JustEnoughWuala
Since the discussion (again) started about Wuala on a NAS/HTPC/Settopbox/Router/Fridge/WhateverHardwareLimitedDeviceWithCPU and some Java-bashing already came up, I want to propose something different:
JEW!
A client written in Python or C (for the C-fanbois...) that has:
- No Interface, but an open API to communicate directly with your local JEW (e.g. "ShowComments(Filename)") - and maybe official XBMC/MediaPortal Plugins
- Maybe filesystem integration, but I'm not even sure if that would be needed/possible on e.g. a NAS with proprietary firmware
- possibility to login (of course...)
- storage trading possibilities
- ability to act as a local "server" for other clients in your network -- if a JEW is detected in your LAN you can decide on your local full Java client to let the JEW download every file instead of the local client and just stream the recombinated encrypted file to your local client to not stress your router too much with too many UDP calls from several clients at once (may be also important for company scenarios!).
- a "Hava Nagila" startup-sound! ;-) (like http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=m6RuURE...)
Edit:
Since getsatisfaction just knows "employees" and "customers": I'm _not_ employed at Caleido (unfortunately) and not tied to them in any way so this is purely an idea _I_ had and not something that is planned or anything like that! I'm actually just a "mastermind" - a user who knows Wuala for some time, who sometimes helps others and who from time to time writes a few lines to the devs about what's going on in the community or if a bug needs to be squashed - NOT and employee!

Inappropriate?I like the idea, but the same old problem arrises: not enough time/developers. should this be priority?
Anyway, the name is awesome. If that gets implemented can I say that I have a JEW on my fridge?
I’m silly

Of course, that's why I'm discussing this here in the "forum" and not asink the devs directly, since I know something like that won't be developed in a few days and has to be thought trough.
LAN awareness though for example could be a first step to make Wuala act better in corporate environments and SoHo scenarios with 2 or 3 PCs and just 1 router and would also be a step towards this "bigger target". -
Inappropriate?LAN awareness would be nice, it my other comp has it, don't download at all from internet.
-
Inappropriate?I also agree - wuala needs some kind of miniclient, that only has to be able to share data - nothing more. Unfortunatly, the REST API[1] has not been worked on for about half a year now.
What I would want JEW for is to install it on an embedded device like a router with a linux-distro on, plug in an usb-drive and thus getting 100% uptime without having to draw too much energy (25watt would be about 40 bucks a year here in germany, having my main system on 24/7 would be more like 400 bucks).
Unfortunatly, I believe that neither JEW nor the API will be developed any further, since any more development would mean, that LaClie would get FOSS rivalry for their planned products. Very unfortunate, because I really like the idea of social storage, but I have doubts that this will work with a profit-oriented company like LaClie (no offense, but they want to sell their products). :/

Inappropriate?time to recreate the whole wuala stuff completely as opensource at last
-
Inappropriate?Well, I'd rather see a comment by one of the developers. Some parts already are open-source and they stated on various pages, that they do like the open-source idea.
So, developers, you're still able to make money by selling storage on the servers and by adding commercial services. What are the next plans on the open-source-roadmap? Are there any chances of higher priorities on the API or a library in the near future?
I’m undecided
-
I asked them last tuesday: Open Source is still a goal in the long run but they don't have the ressources atm to do this step, they'll keep it in mind though.
API is still being worked on, if you need features or anything else just request them in the API-group, you'll be heard! For example: partial downloads are now possible. -
Inappropriate?Well, that's exactly the point - you don't have the manpower, so what would be better than open source guys helping out?
If you have problems opening the whole development, just do it like the blenderheads of blender3d.org - make the repository readonly to always have a working source-tree and put in the patches yourself or use another service like launchpad with the possibility to use web-based unit testing.
Of course that still means that someone will have to check the patches, but I believe, that you'll gain a lot more manpower than you would expect.
I’m happy

Inappropriate?Just to maybe get this clear: I'm not an employee (yes I know - the forum says so... but to be a mod here you have to have employee status) but a community member just like you.
Btw. there's already 2 parts of Wuala Open Sourced + published on Sourceforge... since the echo there was rather nonexistent I guess it's clear that the devs are a bit grumpy about the issue. If you really want Wuala to be Open sourced, look at the code at http://sourceforge.net/projects/quick... and http://sourceforge.net/projects/wuala... and use it, improve it, talk about it etc. and I'm sure they'll see how great it works and will be more easily convinced!
It was the same thing with us "masterminds" - we already helped in the forums a bit so we got more involved and now are kind of community representatives with developer chats, mod status and a cool secret hideout! ;-)
I’m confident
-
Yes... The secret hideout is soooo cooool.... (Rolls Eyes). Now get your feet off the coffee table. -
Inappropriate?Yeah yeah, all those evil masterminds and their plans to take over the world. You know that anything you want to do already has been done either by the simpsons or Mr. Brain and his loyal compagnion Mr. Pinky, right?
I’m jealous
