looking at the competition (or similar projects)
a look at the competition, todays new player: getdropbox.com
today, i came across a supposedly google drive (gdrive, unreleased/nonpublic as of yet) competitor of remote/shared (web)storage space
take a look at their presentation at:
http://www.getdropbox.com/
then ofcourse there is also the windows live foldershare too.

Inappropriate?I lol'd at some of the files they showed :P
Hum... I like some features of that. I think that the only feature that wuala don't/won't have is that delta encoding thing that allows us to revert a file modified several times. I think that it's not easy (maybe impossible) to do that with wuala.
But I didn't see anything in that video regarding file size limits, traffic limits, space limits... And I am sure there are some.
And all those green thicks on the files are annoying. -
Inappropriate?Did anyone of you get an invite? If yes, could you invite me, please? I need to try it out...
I’m thankful

Inappropriate?H4cK d4 pL4n3t...
:-P
Maybe try one of these:

Inappropriate?Well Dropbox looks like a simple interface for a webhoster like Rapidshare with some nice comfort features...
It's nothing revolutionary new but maybe more simple to use than Wuala (Client more tightly integrated into OS, no portforwarding etc. since it's no P2P app, easier to use for backups (Delta function) since no encryption is provided...)
The problem with Wuala is imho that you have many competitors, since you don't focus on a single aspect (like Dropbox with Web access and filesystem integration) - Wuala can be used as:
- a Darknet
- a F2F Application
- a backup solution
- a 1 click hoster
- an alternative for Youporn (how many % of public files are tagged 18+? :D)
- an online photo album
- a video streaming solution (now that stage6 has gone *sniff*), not yet with web access, but who knows...
- ??? -
Inappropriate?10 or 5 GB total space limit for Beta users, it seems they want to sell storage... I guess traffic is not really a problem at this stage but it could get bad for them if some people would create a "few" free accounts with 5 GB (a DvD image has 4,7 GB, 6-7 movies @ ~700 MB are also possible *cough*)

Inappropriate?have anyone taken a look at early mozilla project called weave?
could look promising....

http://www.golem.de/0712/56695.html
at present its some metadata sharing concept, but it also has potential to grow further... -
interesting, possibly more appropriate for smb -
Inappropriate?i've just stumbled over a vote about file sharing apps. someone has voted for wuala, thanks for that :) anyway, there you can find a list of competitors, not so much technology-wise, and not so much ... well, see for yourself :)

@nickname: have you tried alliance p2p? -
Inappropriate?havent used it as of yet. i cant use all the stuff that is out there ;) i just came across it the first time some weeks ago and rememberd the news back then and wanted to add it in here.
cheers.
p.s. the lifehacker vote stuff: if you look at all the candidates/votes there, you will find many of those anonymous/pay-site filehosters there, like rapidshare and so on.
i still miss a feature like that made with the help of the huge wuala distributed storage. it would certainly rock much more than these overloaded traditional webhosters. we would only need to impelment some way of anonymous/pseudonymized access/urls/item-id_s
cheers. -
Well it could be possible I guess, once the webclient from the beta is up and running... The killer feature however would be http(s) access without having to install anything (like on Rapidshare for example, especially for premium accounts: accountname:password@rapidshare.com/etc/pp/yadayada/file.ext) however someone has tho access the files for you then, decrypt them and send them to you - and bandwidth is not free... Maybe a feature for Wuala Premium users? -
Inappropriate?we haven't made it to the top 5 this time, but we're still closed so no that well-known yet. next time, show some love :)
with web start, you'll be able to send links to your friends who don't have wuala yet. up on clicking on the link, the wuala client will start without your friends needing to install wuala or to create an account (only requirement is java). the link can either be to a public file, or to a shared, password-protected folder. the nice thing about this solution is that the decryption is locally and no except owner and receiver needs to know the pw.
if you'd like to have real http access to your files, we could have have a webserver (as shown yesterday in the chat) which delivers the files. this only works for public files, but you could use it to integrate a file into a blog posting or whatever. if this is requested a lot, we could have it up and running quickly. if it's requested even more, we would also need to take care about scalability :)
i think the web start solution will cover a lot of use cases. the public links are nice to recommend public files, password-protected folders are nice to share files with people who don't have wuala yet - clicking on a link is simple. in the following weeks, we need to make this work smoothly before we release it. -
Inappropriate?I was looking at dropbox and one of the things I liked was that demo video on their website. I think it's a good way to get an overview of the program's features (yes, people are lazy when there is a lot of text).
For someone who doesn't know what is Wuala all about it would be nice to have a quick tour video showing the basic features of wuala. Maybe you can do this when you launch the open beta.
I’m happy

Inappropriate?bye bye wuala, here cometh opensource cleversafe:
original website:

faqs:

article in germanary press:
http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldun...
looks promising. -
much fun when you buy the xx computers you need to build up a cleversafe-network. ;) -
Yeah, just buy a few terabyte servers around the globe and build your own network! :D
It's like BitTorrent, only that you'll have to provide the swarm/seeders and the files are not 1:1 on all seeds.
But it surely is great for bigger companys to use, without doubt! -
Inappropriate?Here's a new one:
http://www.zumodrive.com/
I just watched the demo and it looks good, they have a mounted drive that seems solid ;)
The indication of whether a file is or isn't locally stored is essential to someone who wants to browse their files through the mounted drive. Wuala's FSI should have something like that.... -
Argh, I can't stand that voice - but the presentation is nicely done!
The pricing is quite high though... but the FSI is also done quite nicely! They seem to have a windows buff there. I only wonder if it's done via a "local" filesystem or like in wuala via a entwork drive, the drive icon was quite small... if it's via network drive (for example a local smb-server) they will get all kind of problems especially with personal firewalls, like Wuala. -
Oh and I get this nice message: "Sorry, ZumoDrive is currently not available for: Austria" :-(
No Linux client, no love for poor Austrians - and I don't like some stuff in their FAQ as well, like the encryption stuff... if they already require you to install a client, then why not encrypt locally? AES works on iPhones and Android too I bet! Also it's server based... Amazon S3 would be far more reliable, trustworthy and cheaper than that solution and it would allow for files bigger than 300MB and they won't throttle you "based on fair use"...
I have to admit though some stuff is nicely done and would also be a feature that Wuala could need - recycle bin, versioning, easy to use without interface, Shell integration, a cool Ninja icon, forums (though a bit tiny and ugly) that are at least a bit useful... -
They had no problems with Portugal ;)
btw, it's a ninja girl with pink headphones and an iPod! Wuala has a cute dinosaur icon that is almost as cool as that.
EDIT: And I agree with almost everything you said. They use remote encryption probably to improve local performance. -
Inappropriate?I got an invitation for ZumoDrive and I found out that they also don't like Portugal so I already hated them before installing the software. Anyway, I managed to trick the website and I tried it out.
I must say that I like the "mounted drive" thing. It's simple and looks robust. There's also a clear separation between what's offline and what's online. For example: when I open a folder full of pictures the windows explorer doesn't try to download all the images to make a thumbnail. The thumbnails are only shown for locally stored files. This doesn't happen when I browse through my files using the Wuala's FSI...
Besides that there isn't anything new I guess... Pretty much everything is shown in the demo video.
btw: They also have those "bonus" files that come with the account creation so, although I don't like it that much, it's probably a good idea. @Oona: forget about what I said in the chat ;) -
no linux.... their system looks like they need to introduce a new filesystem storage driver, or storage type, to make all this work on windows at least. what is their business model and so forth? -
They sell space on AmazonS3 and charge additional money for their software and stuff... seems more oriented at a Mac-userbase though... (graphically and from the pricelist as well) -
