Use cache as "upload turbo"
Since popular files are likely to be found in more people's caches maybe you could enable uploading from the cache as well. This would also make it easier to get mor storage space sice you can control how many files are in your cache. Of course the contribution of cached files to your space has to be controlled somehow (so you can't set a cachesize of 50 GB, start downloading, then upload your files and then clear the cache...)
My solution:
You can get 10% of your max. donated storage as a bonus from the cache.
Example:
20 GB donated (all 20 GB full)
100% uptime
1GB base storage
10 GB Cache (full)
Now: 21GB
After using the cache: 23GB
If I set my donated files to 100GB:
Now: 101GB
After using the cache: 111GB
This would encourage people to donate more space, since they get a 10% bonus if they share up to 10 times their cache size.
Since you want to implement some kind of "immediately more space from donating" without having to wait for Wuala to request that space this could also be some kind of solution I guess...
Just encrypt cache files to your donated space and flag them as "unimportant" so you don't have to write dummy files to ensure that the space is even there.

Inappropriate?Good idea. Someone has recently written a master thesis on how popular files could be distributed from the caches of the downloaders similarily to BitTorrent. However, we are not using that feature yet as it is an additional component that could cause bugs and wouldn't have a big impact at the moment. However, we have plans to turn it on in future. Then we could also think about rewarding large caches.

Inappropriate?eh i dont get the idea.... more reward from cache? is there a difference between cached files and trade-storage area? if yes, why and does it make sense at all?
a file inside the cache has to come frome somewhere. when it comes from somewhere and i have downloaded it, or created it myself and uploaded it, and store it myself in my own cache at first. am i not automatically also storing this file for wuala chunk distribution too?
maybe some of the caleido staff really needs to draw some technical charts and post up some current information on the wuala data flows and all this stuff, that people can get a better picture of what is happening how with the wuala software.
