Wuala is eating my memory!?
Wuala is eating up my memory?
I've been using Wuala for few weeks, great idea!
I just noticed that it's eating allot of memory, currently my task manager is showing:
Mem Usage: 152,460K VM Size: 154,952K consumed by Wuala.exe
Is it normal?

Inappropriate? My instance of Wuala eats usually 250 - 300 MB. But this is a price I'am willing to pay.
-
Inappropriate? That's a fundamental problem with Java's memory model. If you want this to be fixed, you can go to
http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_...
register and vote for this bug. However, don't expect too much. Some bugs on bugs.sun.com are ten years old and still not fixed. :)
Here are the technical details:
Java applications (like Wuala) never return memory to the operating system. So if Wuala just uses 200 MB once for a second to scale a large image, memory consumption as shown in the task manager will stay at that level. So Wuala might use just 30MB after that operation but Java keeps the 200MB allocated. Sun argues that this doesn't hurt because the operating system will page out the unused 170MB to the hard disk if more memory is needed, thus freeing up the physical memory for other applications. So the 200MB consumption displayed in the Windows Task Manager makes Wuala's memory consumption look much worse than it actually is. :(
I will add a memory meter to the about box with the next update, so it will be possible to see how much memory Wuala is 'actually' using.
(Btw: sometimes memory consumption might go down a little, that's because of memory allocated and freed up by native code that isn't using Java memory.)

Inappropriate?Help->About Wuala. There Wuala displays how much memory Wuala uses. 16 TB can't be true ;)
-
Inappropriate?Mac's JavaVM is Made By Apple, I can't believe they would ALLOW the VM to take that much.
On a side note, i want your disk array. -
Inappropriate?any chance wuala will move away from java? this memory usage is too much for me to take!
I’m frustrated
-
Does it impact performance or is it just a cosmetical issue? -
Inappropriate?Probably Not. Eventually there could be some ports using api's. But such applications are not yet possible.
-
Inappropriate? As Deathbob says, we're not currently considering moving to another implementation language. The explanation with the swap space is technically sound, you should not worry about memory allocation that much and rather worry about usage (which can be seen in the about box).
The memory allocation you report happens after a few days of continued usage, is that correct? Are you running Wuala on a server machine? Or is it straight after launch?
kaspar
I’m sorry for the problem and willing to help
-
Inappropriate?not sure how massive memory usage can be 'cosmetic'
Kaspar, the memory usage seems to increase over time, I'm not running wuala on a server machine. In windows task manager it says javaw.exe +113,000K
and in about it says 43MB memory usage
thanks -
That's because of what Luzius said. Scroll up to read his post :) -
Inappropriate?so you're saying just because 43MB is lower than the task manager number that's alright?!?!
-
Inappropriate?Yes because the unused rest of the memory gets swapped away in the background and does _not_ impact performance in any way (unless you disabled the paging file which is a bad idea anyways).
Again: Does it impact performace measurably (performance != RAM usage)
[ ] yes
[ ] no -
Inappropriate?I did some research. Apparently Mac's Activity Monitor can often be full of it.
At a command line, what does "top" say? -
Inappropriate?current memory usage (Wuala about box): 200 MB
running just for a few hours now
hm...
I’m positive because there's more green light lately
-
Inappropriate?Hmm. I do not know what wuala about box is displaying :P
Wuala shows 61MB usage on my system. Top shows 162 MB usage and from that,142MB of private Space for the thread (after 5 day running).
But neverless, wuala is much more cpu-friendly than it was. RAM-usage did not make me nervous. As said before - it will be swapped when needed (and usually there is enough memory installed on most systems).
