Tuna tracking dangers

1.- You don't get the tags from the tuna till they are caught no?

Satellite tags float to the surface and send via satellite a summary of
the history record, so this way we do not need to catch the tuna again
to know its behaviour. On the contrary, to recover the archival tags,
where all the info is stored in the tag itself, we need someone to catch
the tuna to get the tag back.

2.- so fisherman can't track tuna using this?

Fishermen cannot track tuna with these tags - they would get very
little reward from this technology as you never get a real-time
position, so it would be a wild goose chase.

3.- Is not dangerous to show tuna tracking easily? (also for illegal or
low technologized fishermen) I think that tracking is fondamental but
the results should be restricted.

It is true that Mediterranean bluefin tuna is alarmingly overexploited,
but the high technology incorporated in the boats mean fishermen know
already all too well how to find the tunas. The only way to stop this
massacre is to control and manage the fisheries in a sustainable way,
banning fishing during the fragile spawning season and creating
protected areas for tuna reproduction and/or migration in the
Mediterranean - and of course respecting the established scientific
quotas. By finding new information about tuna migration, WWF is
contributing to a better management of the species. Also note, the
trajectories you see on WWF's website are not real-time positions, and
have also been much simplified - that should be enough to keep the
industrial fishermen guessing.
