Can I see Yelp "Neighbours" like in last.fm?

I want to see people that have reviewed and rated things similar to me but I'm not necessarily friends with like last.fm's "Neighbours" feature. It's a great way to see people who have similar taste and learn about new artist that I haven't listened to yet.
Is this possible in Yelp?

I was checking to see if any of my gmail contacts were on yelp and was only able to get the following message despite using the correct email address (@gmail.com) password and selecting GMail.

"Sorry, you can only invite mail contacts if you have a Hotmail, Yahoo, AOL Mail or Gmail email address. "

gmail account: kestrachern
yelp account: kestrachern

Mini Feed or News Feed on Yelp

It'd be nice to have a Yelp mini-feed just from my Yelp friends, much like the Facebook news feed. The news feed could include reviews, bookmarks (public) and conversations my Yelp friends are participating in.

In a comment to this post (http://icanhaz.com/yelp), Assaf says that some store owners think they're not getting a fair shake with Yelp. Like they are the victims of trolling, and they'd have to pay money to get it 'fixed' on Yelp. Any merit to this? Seems like it would be very damaging to Yelp if so. Ruin the credibility, so why would they allow such?
