Why do I need to provide my cellular phone number? And what does YouData do with it?
I am leery of giving my cell phone number to anyone I don't know - especially anyone in advertising. What's up?

Inappropriate? The issue comes up often during the sign up process, usually in the form of the following 2 questions:
1) Why do I have to provide my cell phone number?
The only reason we require a cellular number is to prevent any individual from creating more than one MeFile in the system. If we did not have such a strict control in place, a few might be tempted to create multiple MeFiles. This would erode the confidence of the advertisers in the quality of the attention they are purchasing, and lower the prices they are willing to bid for your attention.
We encourage consumers to think of your relationship with advertisers as a business. (Corner the market on you.TM) Advertisers are your customers. You want to ensure your customers that your product (your attention) is high quality and "bonafide". By validating against your cell phone, and piggy-backing on all the validation that your carrier did when you got your phone, you are ensuring quality. They pay more for quality. Good business right?
2) What are these guys going to do with my cell number?
Truly nothing. We will never call you or text you without you having explicitly asked for it. We will never give it to anyone else. Advertisers will never see it. We securely store it with the MeFile to ensure nobody else can create a MeFile using that number.
Hope this helps!
I’m glad I asked! ;-)

Inappropriate?I wouldn't mind providing a cell number if I had one. However, I don't at the moment, and so this excludes me from the process? Feels elitist, and I likely won't be back even with my shiny new iPhone one day.
I’m disenchanted

Thank you, lightspring. We sincerely regret that you are disenchanted. We certainly do not enjoy turning anyone away, and the policy is not intended to be elitist. It is crucial, however, to this "marketplace for attention" that we be able to limit the number of MeFiles to one-per-person. So far, requiring a cell phone validation code is the best technical alternative we have been able to come up with.
We will keep trying to come up with other solutions and are always open to suggestions! :-) -
Inappropriate?I have a cell phone, but not with one of the providers on your list. Will I be able to sign up?
-
Inappropriate?Hi awickstr. Send an email to support_at__youdata.com indicating your cellular carrier. We will do some research to see if they can be added to the system.
The carrier must be a US carrier (for now). Pre-paid cell phones are currently excluded due to the transient nature of the accounts and how often the number may change between owners.
Thanks!
