Can I use my FSA debit card to pay for dependent care? Or do I have to pay first then file claims to be reimbursed?

  • You can use your FSA debit card through 24HourFlex to pay for dependent care as long as a) the provider's merchant category code on their credit card machine is set to be dependent care provider and b) the funds are available on the card.

Larger daycare providers will most likely have the correct dependent care setup on their credit card machines but smaller and providers and schools often do not.

If your FSA card is not accepted by your provider you have to show that the expense was incurred (does not have to be paid) and can submit a statement showing the the date of service, the service provided and the amount of the service and you will be reimbursed for the expense.

  • Can the documentation be a handwritten note or does it have to be a formal invoice or payment receipt? We go to a small licensed in-home daycare.
